About the Match
Kings XI Punjab would take on Chennai Super Kings’ citadel in what is most important game for them in the tournament. The match is to be played on 2nd May 2013 in Chennai, a ground where Chennai has been invincible this season. The KXIP squad has been very erratic in this IPL; they’ve challenged big sides and have won games from nowhere and lost a few from commanding positions. On the contrary, Chennai Super Kings have been ruthless, determined and clinical in their approach. A win for CSK would take them to a hit away from top four while a win for KXIP would only keep them in competition. What’s important for them is that a loss would push them into a hole which would take five wins from six to go through to top four.
Chennai Super Kings:
Chennai Super Kings as suggested by their name are playing like kings and are sitting at the top of the table. More importantly, most of their victories have been clinical showing their dominance over the others. Mike Hussey has been in his prime form whereas Raina and Saha are giving him good support at the top of the order. The finishing thrust to the innings is given by Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Dwayne Bravo with Morkel and Morris to follow. Not only that, they have a deep batting lineup and are too good to be bowled out. Beating them has always been difficult, but considering the form they are in, beating them at home is definitely a big ask.
Kings XI Punjab:
The other kings, the Kings from Punjab, have failed to even come closer to what CSK has achieved. KXIP have had a topsy-turvy campaign and would be looking to get some momentum in the last stage of IPL. Management decided to drop Gilchrist in the last game and their bowlers were hammered all over the park and later in the game their batting failed to keep the wickets intact. They had some poor umpiring decisions against them, but they lost the game nonetheless. David Miller has been a key performer and would play a vital role in tomorrow’s game. Kings XI Punjab is a good team on paper and has the potential to overthrow any other side.
Can the Kings from Punjab defeat the Super Kings? It’s possible, but looking at the form of both the sides, it looks rather improbable. CSK is a team on song while Kings XI Punjab has more than a few issues to solve. Their bowling isn’t hasn’t been convincing and their batting isn’t looking to be a big threat to Chennai’s bowling. Chennai Super Kings, on the other hand, have been excellent in all departments. They have a deep batting lineup, versatile bowling unit and safe fielders. No doubt that the Kings XI Punjab has a good squad, but beating Chennai demands something more than that. Chennai Super Kings are clear favorites for me in this match.
