About the Match
Mumbai Indians have failed to sparkle in the first three matches this season and are yet to open their points tally; they will face Chennai Super Kings, who have 4 points from 2 matches, on 17th April at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai. The hosts have it going a bit tough but they do have the capability to make a comeback with a victory here. CSK on the other hand are ruthless when it comes to executing their strategy and moving towards victory; they clearly go in as favorites but Mumbai Indians will enjoy the support from the home crowd, which could be the turning point for the team.
They lost their match against Rajasthan Royals by 7 wickets after the batsmen posted 164 in 20 overs. Kieron Pollard’s 70 came off just 34 balls while Corey Anderson supported the Caribbean with a 38-ball 50; together they put on 104 runs in just 9 overs. On the bowling front, Vinay Kumar bowled with good control with the new ball and took a wicket while Lasith Malinga and Shreyas Gopal also took a wicket each. But they failed to control the opponents in reaching the target. Their 18-run shocking loss to Kings XI Punjab would be hurting them especially with Harbhajan Singh playing a breezy knock as he stitched a marvellous partnership with Jagadeesha Suchit; but in the end, they slid towards defeat. However, they have a great blend of youth and experienced players like Rohit Sharma, Aaron Finch, Corey Anderon and Kieron Pollard, who are in the great form with the bat. But their bowling and fielding hasn’t been up to the mark and they should improve on both counts if they want to keep their hopes alive this season.
Chennai Super Kings
Chennai Super Kings beat Sunrisers Hyderabad by 45 runs after setting up a superb target of 209. Skipper MS Dhoni and Brendon McCullum propelled CSK to a huge total with some superb batting; McCullum smashed 56-ball 100 while Dhoni finished with 53 off 29. On the bowling front, Dwayne Bravo, Ashish Nehra and Mohit Sharna bowled a slew of slower deliveries to put the opposition under pressure; Mohit Sharma picked up 2 wickets with the new ball. Their first game against Delhi Daredevils looked pretty ordinary; if not for those two sixes by MS Dhoni in the last over, CSK wouldn’t have even reached 150. They won by a solitary run on account of some good bowling from the likes of Ashish Nehra and Ravichandran Ashwin. Overall, CSK boast of a formidable middle order with the presence of Faf du Plessis, Suresh Raina and MS Dhoni while Brendon McCullum will be the one the team will bank on for fiery starts. The bowling attack looks strong and they have the talent and guts to beat the opposition and win more matches.
Both are powerful sides and the match is going to be a cracking contest but Mumbai Indians need to pull up their socks and make an impact against CSK. While Chennai Super Kings are the most consistent performers in the IPL, we feel that Mumbai Indians will finally shine on home turf and win the upcoming match.
