About the Match
Facing the next match against Sunrisers Hyderabad at Ranchi on 22nd May, the Chennai Super Kings are already in the next level of the tournament having 16 points from 12 matches. The Sunrisers are in a different mode having won against Royal Challengers Bangalore in their last match, and thus equalling RCB in points with 10 points and in contention to fill up the 4th spot, if the Knight Riders stumble in their remaining matches. The competition has heated up and both teams will try their best to avoid defeat at this point.
Chennai Super Kings
They have lost some matches in between but maintained their position on the points table by keeping cool and performing when it was needed the most. The last match against the Knight Riders was a poor example of the Super Kings’ ability, where they failed to post a formidable total, batting first and then failing to defend the same by some shoddy fielding. When they batted, Smith fell early and McCullum and Raina took the total to 60 wherein McCullum fell for a deceptive delivery by Narine. Raina continued with du Plessis and made 65 off 52 balls with 3 fours and 5 superb sixes however, the team could muster only 154 losing 4 wickets. Their bowling was not effective and Utthappa caused havoc coming to open the chase with Gambhir; below standard fielding cost the match for the Super Kings and allowed the Knight Riders to get 2 more points and stand equal with Rajasthan Royals. Sunrisers are another motivated lot and should the Super Kings repeat their shoddy performance, it will certainly be difficult for them to be in a right frame of mind while playing in the next stage of the game.
The team was at its best to achieve the task cut out in front of them by fighting Royal Challengers Bangalore in their last match and winning by 7 wickets. They bowled well, fielding was outstanding and reduced the opponents to 23 for 2 in 6th over when Kohli and Yuvraj came together and took the score to 82 and later de Villiers took it to 141 in the company of Kohli. RCB players hit 6 sixes and took the team to a decent and challenging total of 160 runs; then came the crafty batting of Dhawan and Warner to entertain and astonish the spectators, by opening the innings in reply to the task set by Challengers. Sixes and fours rained all over and the crowd responded to the efforts of the home team with cheers and chants all through and their dream was realised with 2 balls to spare by Sammy after the departure of another stupendous effort by Ojha. The team needs to further raise the level of their game to overcome the formidable Super Kings and level with Knight Riders, should they fail to win any other match.
The contest will be a tough one and could swing either way, as CSK seems to stumble in its overall performace; the Sunrisers are coming to form at the right time and if they continue their performance, they have a chance to beat the Super Kings to rise to the next level.
