About the Match
Topping the table during league stage, Super Gillies have proved to be a strong unit and they will leave no stone unturned to make it to the finals when they meet Kovai Kings in the 2nd Semi-Final match at Chennai on 17th September to meet Patriots. Kovai Kings defeated Dragons by 16 runs in the last match and made it to the top-four attaining the 4th spot with 8 points; they will be determined to repeat the match-winning performance against Gillies in this crucial contest. It needs to be seen which side can overcome the challenges on Saturday and emerge better side of the two.
Chepauk Super Gillies
Gopinath and Saravanan posted an 86-run partnership for the 2nd wicket to take the total to 154 runs batting first against Veerans; fast-bowler Mukumthan then registered a superb 5-17 to demolish the top and middle order and along with the support of others like Alexander, Antony Dhas and Sai Kishore, they won the match by a massive 41 runs.
In the match against Super Giants, Sargunam put up a tremendous show by scoring 73 off 46 deliveries; captain R Sathish then contributed with a blitzing 57 off 27 balls to take the scoreboard to a challenging 178. Spinner Sai Kishore then took 3-12 to stifle the opponents while other speedsters like Antony Dhas, Mahesh, Kumaran and all-rounder Sathish provided regular breakthroughs to help win the match by 55 runs.
While the batting line-up has in-form batsmen like Gopinath, Sargunam, Saravanan and Sathish, the bowling attack is well-balanced with spin and pace, which gives them the edge to dominate on the field.
LYCA Kovai Kings
Batting first against Dragons, the openers Suryaprakash and Anirudh Sita Ram put up a 67-run opening stand; while Suryaprakash scored a well-made 51, Anirudh contributed with 38 off 29. With support from M Mohammed, who posted a quick fire 27 off 12 balls, the Kings challenged the Dragons to a 147-run target. Speedsters Vignesh and Harish Kumar, who took 3 wickets, demolished the opposition’s batting line-up and took the team safely to a win by 16 runs.
However, in the match against Veerans, the batsmen failed to chase down 171 runs, losing the match narrowly by 2 runs despite a superb 63 off 47 by Anirudh and an unbeaten 46 by all-rounder Harish Kumar. Earlier, the bowlers took regular wickets but gave away too many runs; spinner Syed Mohammad took a wicket and put up an economical spell while paceman Harish Kumar took 2 wickets but proved to be costly.
The bowlers have been consistently taking wickets and they can challenge the Gillies batsmen in the upcoming match; the top order can build a strong foundation while the middle order can keep the scoreboard ticking. They have good resources to cross this hurdle too and make it through.
While LYCA Kovai Kings have played well and won their previous match, we see Gillies as the favourites here after topping the league stage. We feel that Chepauk Super Gillies with their determined all-rounders, match-winners and performing skipper will win here to make it to the finals
