We are not even at the halfway stage in the Super Smash and things are beginning to take shape beautifully. The competition to prove supremacy is already intense in the middle of the points table and is growing with every passing match. Even though Wellington Firebirds seem to be running away with the momentum currently, a couple of bad matches can turn things around for them with Kings and Stags breathing right below their neck.
Canterbury Kings and Central Stags are set to take on each other in the upcoming match, the result of which would govern who would stay on second place on the ladder. While Stags have won more matches thus far in the tournament, they also have had the luxury of playing more matches. This upcoming match is to be played on 10th January 2021 at Hagley Oval, Christchurch.
It is not always right to judge a team on a basis of performance of just two matches, but whatever the Kings have done so far has been top-drawer. They have played only a couple of games up until now and have arguably looked to be one of the most fluent sides of the tournament. Their net run-rate, which is 2.756, is an evidence enough for that. With eight points, they are placed at the third spot, but a win here will put them to the second spot and that is exactly what they'll be aiming for.
Matt Henry was called up to play for New Zealand in the last match and while one would imagine their bowling to be rendered a little weak in his absence, it didn't happen. Their previous match was cut short by rain as they won the match on the basis of DLS method. They were required to chase a total of 53 in five overs and they did that with considerable ease.
On paper, the Kings do not have players who are known to be star individual performers, but together the Kings form an incredible team. They have a perfect batting lineup having swashbuckling openers who both can take away the game in a matter of few overs. Besides their batting, their bowling is terrific and we have seen that in the two matches gone by. Overall, they have a team that is capable to punch right above it's weight. If they can do that in the upcoming match as well, the Stags will have their work cut out.
Cameron Fletcher, Chad Bowes, Jack Boyle, Leo Carter, Ken McClure, Daryl Mitchell, TD Astle, Cole McConchie, Will Williams, Ed Nuttall, Matt Henry.
Central Stags are currently placed at the second spot at the ladder, but it would be wrong to say that they have been the second best team so far. They'd be disappointed that they have taken five matches to score 12 points and would certainly want to improve going forward. One thing that goes in their favor is that they have been pretty dominant in the wins that they have posted and their losses have been fairly close.
They are coming off a massive win over Otago Volts in their most recent encounter and will be brimming with confidence. However, they'll still be wary about the outing that they had a couple of days ago. Their batting suffered a massive collapse against the Knights as they were restricted to a total of 117. They responded to it with a fantastic display in their subsequent match, scoring 223 against the Volts.
On paper, they have a terrific team, but the lack of consistency could hurt them. George Worker is in fantastic form for them and would be key to Stags' fortunes. He is coming fresh off a hundred and will be oozing with confidence. Besides, they have a decent middle-order that can wreak havoc on any bowling attack. Michael Rippon, Jacob Duffy, and Mitch McClenaghan have been in terrific form with the bat and would want to continue doing that. If the Stags can play to their potential, beating them is not going to be easy
Dane Cleaver, Ross Taylor, Christian Leopard, Will Young, George Worker, Josh Clarkson, Doug Bracewell, KN Barnett, Blair Tickner, Ajaz Patel, Joey Field.
This is an important match for both sides, but for different reasons. Central Stags have already played give matches and would want to gather as many wins as possible in their remaining matches. The Kings, on the other hand, would want to keep winning to get closer to the top of the table position. The Stags have been a bit inconsistent and that could come back to bite them. Considering that and the other above-stated reasons, we are backing Canterbury Kings to emerge on top in this important fixture.
