CM vs ADH Match Prediction - Jan 18, 2022

We are now into the back-end of the league stage in the Women's Super Smash 2021 and things are gearing up for a tight finish. Wellington Blaze Women and Otago Sparks Women have already qualified for the next round and the battle now remains for the only remaining spot. There are two contenders for that spot in Auckland Hearts Women and Canterbury Magicians Women and the next few matches are going to be critical.

Canterbury Magicians Women and Auckland Hearts Women are set to take on each other on the morning of 18th January 2021 at Hagley Oval, Christchurch. This match will likely govern the third occupant of the next round and they both are expected to come out all guns blazing. A cracker of a contest is certainly on the cards.

CM vs ADH Team Previews

Canterbury Women

Just around a couple of matches ago, Canterbury Magicians were the firm favorites to be the occupants of the third spot on the ladder, but a loss at the hands of Auckland Hearts Women has certainly set their campaign back. They would now need to register a win in this upcoming match and if they are able to do that, they will be once again back ahead in the race.

Currently, on the points table, Canterbury Magicians are at the fourth spot, right behind the Hearts, only because of their inferior net run rate. From a total of seven matches played, they have won three and lost four. They have a pretty poor net run rate of -0.498, which they would definitely want to improve and a big win in this upcoming match will help them massively in that department as well.

They have reasonably well in their recent matches, winning two-four their four matches. They recently lost to Auckland Hearts and would want to return the favors back in this upcoming match. On paper, Canterbury Magicians Women have a decent side with experience available right through. The likes of Amy Satterthwaite, Lea Tahuhu, and Frances Mackay will be their key players and if they are able to come good, there isn't much that the Hearts will be able to do.

Auckland Hearts Women

Auckland Women got off to a fantastic start to the tournament but stumbled on their way forward. However, with a recent win up their sleeve, they are once again looking in contention for a playoff spot. They would need to win at least two of their remaining three matches and a win here in this upcoming match will make their job a whole lot easier.

As it currently stands on the points table, Auckland Hearts Women are placed at the third spot with three wins and four losses. They have a pretty poor net run rate of -0.474, which isn't really going to matter if they are able to get the desired number of wins. Having said that, improving the net run rate will be on the back of their minds as that can make a difference if things get tight at the end.

After having a winless streak that lasted for three matches, Auckland Hearts Women finally bounced back to contention with a much-needed win over Canterbury Magicians Women. That win was by no way clinical, but it was a win nonetheless. Batting first on a decent surface, Auckland Hearts Women managed to put up a decent total of 135 runs on the board, riding on superb knocks by Lauren Down and Holly Huddleston. There was, however, no support from the rest of the batsmen else it could have been a total of 15-20 runs more.

On the bowling front, the Hearts Women did a spectacular job with Ariene Kelly and Holly Huddleston leading from the front. Without giving away too many runs, they picked up a couple of wickets together and that proved to be vital in their defense. Molly Penfold was their best bowler of the day as she returned with the figures of 2 for 29 in her 4 overs. Post that win, however, they suffered another massive loss and will now be very keen to get back to the winning ways.

On paper, Auckland Hearts Women do appear to be a bit too over-reliant on the likes of Lauren Down, Holly Huddleston, and Ariene Kelly. Having said that, stopping them is going to be very difficult if those players come good. If the Hearts are able to perform to their peak potential, getting past them is going to be very difficult.
