Canterbury Women

The Canterbury women played their last match against Central Districts women on 27th January. They won the rain-shortened game by a margin of 25 runs according to the Duckworth and Lewis system. Batting first in this match Canterbury women scored a decent total of 156 runs for the loss of 4 wickets in their stipulated 20 overs. Kate Anderson batted superbly to score 92 not out from 69 balls to take her side to a respectable total almost single-handedly. She hit as many as 14 fours in the process.

Anderson was supported by the skipper Amy Satterthwaite and Natalie Cox during her innings. These two ladies did not score too many runs but supported Kate Anderson well towards a good total on the board. Jess Watkin was the most successful bowler for Central Districts picking up 2 wickets for 37 runs from her 4 overs. Although Claudia Green bowled well for her 2 overs, other bowlers went for a lot of runs. During the Central Districts' reply to this total set by Canterbury, rains came down. The target was restructured to 137 runs from 18 overs as a result.

Natalie Dodd once again provided a solid start to the Canterbury chase by hitting a fifty from an even number of balls. She was helped by other batswomen such as Kerry Anne Tomlinson and Mikaela Greig. But none of these batters could score the requisite runs quickly enough. This effort fell short by 25 runs in the end as Central Districts could manage just 111 runs for the loss of 4 wickets from their 18 overs. Kate Anderson followed a terrific display with the bat with a good one with the ball. She bowled 3 overs for 14 runs and also picked up a wicket.

Otago Sparks Women

The Otago Sparks women are also going into this game after a win over Central Districts women. In the 25th match of the Women's Super Smash for 2022-23 played on 29th January, Otago women defeated the Central Districts team by 6 wickets with 4 balls to spare. Batting first, the Central Districts women scored just 108 runs from their 20 overs. The Otago women chased down this total losing 4 wickets in the process in 19.2 overs. They scored 111 runs for the loss of 4 wickets. Central District's women's vows in this game would have been worse if it hadn’t been for later-order heroics by Flora Devonshire.

Flora Devonshire hit 39 runs from 27 balls with 4 fours and 2 sixes to provide some respectability to the Central Districts total. The best bowler for Otago women in this game was easily Sophie Oldershaw. She picked up 3 wickets for 24 runs from her quota of 4 overs. She was well aided in her efforts by the likes of the opening bowlers Emma Black and ME Loe who also picked up a wicket apiece. Both these bowlers bowled economically and did not allow the Central Districts' women to settle down and get going. Kate Ebrahim also picked up one wicket for 23 runs from her 4 overs.

The Otago women batters combines well together to ensure that there were no ugly hiccups during their chase. The opening batswoman Olivia Gain scored 23 runs from 22 balls with 4 fours to set up the chase. The wicketkeeper-batswoman Polly Inglis scored 30 runs from 35 balls with 3 fours to remain unbeaten in the inning. The Otago skipper Felicity Leydon-Davis also contributed 25 runs lower down the order from 24 balls to take her side across the line. She hit 3 fours in her inning.
