About the Match
The Lions defeated Warriors by 8 wickets in a shortened match to make it to the title clash against Cape Cobras on 28th February at Cape Town; the Cobras had emerged as the first finalists of the Momentum ODI Cup by topping the table and they will be eager to put up a smashing performance here to lift the trophy. Lions, who finished second in the league stage, have done well to reach here and will put up a strong fight to challenge the hosts; the contest will surely be a complete entertainer and both teams will leave no stone unturned to dominate on the field and win match on Sunday.
The Cobras have a long batting line-up with players like Puttick, Stiaan van Zyl, Justin Ontong and Dane Vilas, who posted a brilliant 105 off just 70 balls in the recent game against Warriors; they have time and again proved that they are a formidable force to reckon with and will be motivated to repeat their match-winning performance against Lions here.
Dane Paterson has done well with his fast bowling skills and he took 3-54 against Warriors; Wayne Parnell, Moreki, Hendricks and Mgijima are the other seamers in the pace attack while Dane Piedt brings his spin magic to the team. They combine well to restrict the opposition in their run-flow and can provide quick breakthroughs against Lions, as seen in the recent match on 7th February wherein they restricted the batsmen to a lowly 133 runs getting them all-out by the 41st over.
The Cobras have defeated Lions once before but also suffered a loss against them in the beginning of the series; they will not take their opponents lightly and will definitely strategize well to contain the Lions batsmen on Sunday too.
In the semi-finals against Warriors, the batsmen had to chase down 174 runs in 32 overs and Rassie van der Dussen scored a well-made 83 off 89 deliveries to steer the team safely to victory. Dominic Hendricks scored 70 off 56 balls to support the team well and win the match by 8 wickets through D/L method.
Earlier, the bowlers Pretorius, Viljoen, Pongolo and Phangiso had taken 2 wickets each to restrict Warriors to 202 runs; they have a good combination of pace and spin that can prove to be a challenge for the Cobras on Sunday. However, when they met the same opponent during the league stage recently, they had put up a lacklustre performance with the bat and will be eager to redeem themselves with a win here.
Overall, they have good talented batsmen like Stephen Cook, who leads from the front, Dussen, Hendricks, Petersen, Bavuma and Nicky van den Bergh; if they can come out all guns blazing whether batting first or during chase, then the bowlers can try their best to take the team through. They must stay focused on the end goal and try to execute the game plan to perfection in order to outwit the opponents.
While the Cobras are favourites here on home turf, Lions have done well to reach this stage and will definitely put up a challenging contest on Sunday; the match could go down to the wire, but we feel that the Lions with a strong win recently, are better placed to emerge victorious on Sunday
