About the Match
Comilla Victorians defeated Rajshahi Kings in the last game by 9 wickets, continuing their winning momentum; they are now in the 3rd position with 4 points and will take on Chittagong Vikings on 14th November at Dhaka. The Vikings are placed 5th with just 2 points after suffering consecutive losses to Khulna Titans and the Victorians earlier, wherein they failed to defend 143 runs and lost the match by 8 wickets. Both teams will face each other again on Tuesday, and it needs to be seen if the Vikings can bounce back here with a much-needed win.
Chasing 144 against Vikings was a walk in the park for the in-form batting line-up as Jos Buttler smashed away sixes and fours to post 48 off 42 while Marlon Samuels and Imrul Kayes played useful knocks of 30+ runs each to steer the team across the finish line. Wicket-keeper and opener Liton Das also performed well, scoring a quickfire 23 off 14 to start the chase on a positive note. Earlier, fast-bowler Mohammad Saifuddin claimed a superb 3-24 while Dwayne Bravo and Al-Amin Hossain took 3 wickets between them. Captain Mohammad Nabi also dismissed one opponent with his spin skills.
Recently against Rajshahi Kings, Mohammad Nabi led from the front with the ball, taking a spectacular 3-15 to restrict the opponents to 115. He got good support from spinner Rashid Khan and speedsters Dwayne Bravo and Al-Amin Hossain, who took a wicket each. Jos Buttler yet again showcased his brilliant form during the chase, scoring a well-made 50 off 39 while Liton Das went berserk to post a smashing 23 off just 12 deliveries. Imrul Kayes also did well to score 44 and take the team to another victory by 9 wickets.
The batsmen and bowlers are in good shape and have proven to be a tough contingent till now. With strong performers like Nabi, Buttler, Liton Das and Imrul Kayes, the Victorians surely can continue their winning streak.
They failed to chase down 171 runs against Khulna Titans as the top-order collapsed early in the chase. Soumya Sarkar was dismissed for a duck while others like Luke Ronchi and Dilshan Munaweera couldn’t impress with the bat. Middle-order batsmen Misbah-ul-Haq and Sikandar Raza steadied the innings with 30 and 37 runs respectively. Luis Reece and Tanbir Hayder also tried to keep the scoreboard ticking but it was too late to recover; they lost the match by 18 runs.
Speedster Taskin Ahmed took 3 wickets but gave away too many easy runs. Left-arm spinner Sunzamul Islam also pitched in with 2-20 while Subashis Roy and Munaweera provided one breakthrough each. However, they couldn’t put up a disciplined attack and ended with a 171-run target.
Luke Ronchi had done well against Victorians, scoring 40 off 21 while Soumya Sarkar played a useful knock of 38 runs. Munaweera and Sikandar Raza tried to keep the scoreboard ticking but they could only muster 143 runs, which the bowlers failed to defend. They have experienced players like Ronchi, Sarkar, Misbah-ul-Haq and Sikandar Raza, who could do better to set a good foundation with the bat, whether going in first or during a chase.
Comilla Victorians are in very good form and have the psychological advantage of having won against Vikings previously. However, Chittagong Vikings will put their best foot forward to avenge their earlier defeat on Tuesday. Given the form and teams on paper, the Victorians are more likely to prevail in this important encounter of BPL 2017.
