About the Match
Rangpur Riders defeated Khulna Titans by 8 wickets to make it to the semi-finals, and they will take on Comilla Victorians, who lost the qualifier match against Dhaka Dynamites by 95 runs, on 10th December at Dhaka. The Riders successfully chased down 168 runs and have come back with a bang into the running; Victorians, on the other hand, succumbed under pressure while chasing 191, leading to a humiliating defeat. Both teams will now fight it out in the qualifier match and it needs to be seen which side can overcome the challenges and emerge victorious on Sunday.
The top-order collapsed like a pack of cards as players like Liton Das, Imrul Kayes, Jos Buttler, Marlon Samuels and Shoaib Malik were dismissed for single digits within the 10th over while chasing 191 against Dynamites. Tamim Iqbal fought a lone battle as he scored 31 runs while Hasan Ali and Mehedi Hasan desperately tried to get some runs on board; however, with no support from others, they lost the match by 95 runs. Earlier, Hasan Ali took 3-16 to cause some worries for the Dynamites while all-rounder Shoaib Malik dismissed one opponent. Dwayne Bravo, Hasan and Al-Amin proved to be expensive here.
Against Sylhet Sixers recently, Liton Das and Marlon Samuels did well with the bat, scoring 65 and 55 runs respectively to take the total to 170. Spinner Graeme Cremer took 3-15 to stifle the opponents while Hasan Ali and Mehedi Hasan continued with their wicket-taking abilities, dismissing 2 wickets each. They have a well-balanced team of batsmen and bowlers, who have consistently done well.
The recent defeat against Dynamites must have hurt their morale but they do have resources who could help them bounce back with a win here.
Chris Gayle posted a heroic 126 off 51 to take his team across the finish line while chasing 172 against Titans and make it to the semi-finals. The maverick batsman who hadn’t been in form, struck hard at a crucial time and brought them the victory they needed. Mohammad Mithun who has been doing well, contributed with 30 runs, and adds depth to the batting line-up. Earlier, Nazmul Islam, Rubel Hossain, Ravi Bopara and spinner Sohag Gazi took a wicket each to restrict the opponents. Lasith Malinga provided 2 breakthroughs; he brings years of experience to the side that has many talented bowlers.
Against Dynamites, they failed to chase down 137 runs, after players like Brendon McCullum and Mohammad Mithun were dismissed in the early overs. Johnson Charles and Ravi Bopara contributed with 20+ runs each but the others in the middle and lower order too failed to revive the innings. Rubel Hossain and Ebadat Hossain took 2 wickets each while spinner Samuel Badree provided a crucial breakthrough. Nahidul Islam and Abdur Razzak also took a wicket each, and bring variety to the attack.
The Riders have done well to survive the challenge and make it to the next stage; they have match-winners like Gayle, Mithun, Ravi Bopara and a brigade of bowlers, who could stifle the Victorians here.
The Victorians had won both times they met with Riders previously and have good resources to repeat the winning performance here; however, we feel that the hard-hitting Riders are better placed to emerge as the second finalists of the season.
