CS vs WF Match Prediction - Jan 08, 2022

We have just passed the midway mark in the Super Smash 2021 and with three teams tied at 12 points each in the middle part of the points table, the league stage is all set for an exciting finish. No team is certain of a qualification slot yet and the results of the next few matches are really going to set the tone.

Up next in the tournament, Central Districts are all set to take on Wellington Firebirds in what is expected to be a very close encounter. Both these sides are placed in the middle part of the ladder and will be searching for a win here to make a move. The match is to be played at The Pukekera Park, New Plymouth on January 8th, 2021.

CS vs WF Team Previews

Central Districts

Central Districts have had a mediocre kind of tournament thus far and will be desperately looking to make a move on as we move towards the business end of the tournament. Although they are unlikely to be targeting finishing at the top spot, they will be eying capturing the remaining two spots.

As it currently stands, Central Districts are the occupants of the fourth spot on the ladder with three wins and four losses from a total of seven games. They have 12 points to their name, but given that there are two other teams with the same number of points, they would certainly need to get some more wins under their belt. The fact that they do not have a particularly standout net run rate doesn't help them either.

Recently, Central Districts are coming off a deflating loss at the hands of Canterbury Kings, who have arguably been one of the best sides of the tournament thus far. First, their batsmen did an incredible job of putting up a tall total of 217 runs on the board, but their bowlers conceded that with Canterbury having 16 balls to spare and 5 wickets in their hands. Tom Bruce played a remarkably good innings, scoring 93 off just 36 deliveries, and was ably assisted by Dane Cleaver, who smashed 61 off 32 balls.

On the bowling front, however, they looked dismal as none of their bowlers managed to keep things tight. So poor was their bowling that apart from Tom Bruce, all of their bowlers conceded runs at an economy rate of at least 10 runs an over.

On paper, Central Stags have a decent side that is a little too over-reliant on their lower-middle order with the bat. Their opening pair lacks the big match experience and that could be a major factor in this upcoming match. Besides, their bowlers have blown hot and cold up until now and they will need to be at their best in this upcoming match. All in all, they have the capability on paper and if they can convert that into performance in this match, they will certainly be in business.

Wellington Firebirds

Wellington Firebirds have historically been one of the best sides in the Kiwi domestic circuit, but they have not been able to weave their magic in this edition of the tournament yet. They are in a decent position to progress into the next round but a loss in this upcoming match might well spoil their plans.

Currently, Wellington Firebirds are placed at the third spot on the ladder with three wins and three losses. They have a total of 12 points to their name and another win will solidify their position among the top three sides. They are above the Stags and Aces only because of their superior net run rate of -0.064, which they would like to improve going forward.

Wellington got off to a rather poor start to the tournament but with a couple of wins in their last two matches, Wellington Firebirds have finally got their rhythm back. In their last match, they conceded a total of 157 batting first, which they ended up chasing with rather ease based on the Duckworth Lewis method. Aided by knocks from Michael Bracewell and Troy Johnson, Finn Allen scored a brilliant fifty to guide Firebirds to an important victory.

On paper, Wellington Firebirds have one of the better-balanced sides of the tournament and with their experienced players coming back in form, they would be brimming with confidence. The presence of Finn Allen, Michael Bracewell, and Troy Johnson add to their strength at the top. Also, with James Neesham available in the middle order, they have a deep batting unit that is not short on bowling resources. With the balance they have, they will always be a tough side to beat and if they are able to play to their potential in this upcoming match, getting past them is going to be incredibly difficult.

CS vs WF Toss Prediction

With short boundaries on offer, defending can be a bit challenging here and we have seen that happen. Also, the decision to bat first can backfire big time if the team batting first manages to put up a big score first up, especially with the surface likely to slow down as the day progresses. The captains of both sides will be wary of that at the toss and the captain winning the toss is expected to bat first here.

Pitch and Conditions

This is the second match of the day at the venue and both teams would have had a fair idea about the surface when the captains come out for toss in this upcoming contest. Although the boundaries are short here, the surface hasn't really been as easy for batting as we generally see in the T20s here. Having said that, batsmen once set should enjoy batting here. Given that this match will be happening on a used surface, the spinners are likely to come into the picture - more so in the second innings. A total of anything over 170 should be a good one for the team batting first.

Finn Allen has been in excellent form since the last season of the Super Smash and was one of the primary reasons for the Firebirds' title finish. He smashed a brilliant fifty in the last match and will be brimming with confidence. He seems to be all set for another one here and the fact that he bats at the top of the order allow him an ample opportunity to do so. Bet on Finn Allen to score a fifty here.

Just like Finn Allen, Dane Cleaver has been in terrific form and has been one of the best batsmen for the Stags. He too is coming off a fantastic half-century and will be fancying another one. This is a bet pretty similar to the first one and complements that spectacularly. Bet on Dane Cleaver as well to score a half-century here.
