DCW vs MIW Match Prediction - Mar 09, 2023

The Delhi Capitals Women will have the Mumbai Indians Women for the first time in this inaugural season of the WPL on Thursday at the DY Patil Sports Academy in Navi Mumbai.

Both the teams are in excellent form at the moment, having won both their opening matches. However, it is Mumbai Indians who are at the top spot on the points table, thanks to a better NRR compared to that of the Delhi Capitals. However, a win here for the Capitals will help them overtake their rivals.

DCW vs MIW Team Previews

Delhi Capitals Women

Just like the Mumbai Indians, the Delhi Capitals too will be relying on its strong batting line-up to lead them to their third successive win here.

Meg Lanning, who recently led Australia to its 3rd consecutive title in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup is in sensational form, scoring half-centuries in both matches so far. In addition to her, the Capitals have some power hitters at the top of the order, including Alice Capsey and Marizanne Kapp.

Shafali Verma and Jemimah Rodrigues are regulars in the Indian National team and will play an important role in this match as both appear to be in good touch at the moment. Jess Jonassen put up an impressive all-round display in the last match as she scored an unbeaten 42 of just 20 deliveries to propel Delhi to their second consecutive 200+ score this season and also picked up 3 wickets during the chase to rattle to UP batters.

The team does however lack quality Indian spinners and Radha Yadav has gone wicketless in both matches. Tara Norris, who is the only Associate Nations player to feature in this year’s WPL picked up a fifer in the Capitals’ first match and will be looking to put up a similar performance in this match too.

While batting is Delhi’s biggest strength, the lack of quality bowlers can be a bit of an issue against quality opposition like Mumbai Indians.

Mumbai Indians Women

The Mumbai Indians have invested heavily in all-rounders during the auctions and are reaping the benefits of that strategy. They have some of the biggest names in Women’s T20 cricket in their squad, including Hayley Matthews, Nat Sciver-Brunt, Amelia Kerr, and Pooja Vastrakar and as a result, have quite a deep batting line-up.

Hayley Matthews and Sciver-Brunt were in brutal form during the Indians’ latest match against RCB, as the duo put up an unbeaten partnership of 114 runs for the second wicket as they chased down the target of 156 quite comfortably.

Earlier in the match, Matthews was equally good with the ball, picking up 3 wickets for 28 runs, in an excellent display of her all-round abilities. In addition to the all-rounders, the Mumbai Indians will bank on captain Harmanpreet Kaur and wicketkeeper-batter Yastika Bhatia to play a big inning here.

Leg spinner Saika Ishaque is emerging as one of the best buys for the Indians as she has bowled a tight line and length in both matches so far and has picked up 6 wickets. She has received good support from her fellow slower bowlers Amelia Kerr and Matthews. The quicker bowlers have struggled a bit though as the likes of Issy Wong and Jintimani Kalita have found it difficult to pick wickets.

Overall, the Indians seem to have found a good balance of players and will be looking to continue their winning streak.

DCW vs MIW Toss Prediction

The team winning the toss is likely to opt to bat first here.

Read our guide on toss predictions to learn how we analyze and come up with our tips.

Pitch and Conditions

The DY Patil Sports Academy has an excellent surface to bat on and the average first-inning score here is around 185. While there is little help for the quicker bowlers in terms of movement off the seam, the spinners will be able to get some turn as the match progresses. The team batting first will be looking to set a target of over 200 runs to put the opposition batters under pressure.

The weather is expected to be clear with temperatures of between 30-33 degrees Celsius.

DCW vs MIW Betting Tips

Both teams have played exceedingly well so far this season and there is little separating the two in terms of form, making this one of the more difficult matches to call. However, we feel that the Mumbai Indians hold a slight edge here as they have greater depth in their batting and also have a stronger bowling line-up, think could be the biggest differentiator here.

Bet on the Mumbai Indians Women to win.

Meg Lanning is in excellent form over the last few months. After an outstanding effort in the Women’s T20 World Cup as a captain and as a batter, she has brought that confidence to the WPL too. She has put up scores of 72 and 70 in the first 2 matches and was the top-scorer for the Capitals in their last outing. We are therefore backing her to once again emerge as the top batter here.

The Mumbai Indians have scored 44 and 54 runs during the Powerplay in the two matches that they have played so far. Their opening pair of Yastika Bhatia and Hayley Matthews is in good form and the team has some powerful hitters in the top order, who can easily propel the Indians to a big score during the Powerplay. Therefore, the only way to go here is Over.

Saika Ishaque has been in good form this season, picking up 6 wickets in the 2 matches so far. She was the top bowler for the team in the first match, picking up 4 wickets, and was a close second in the next one with 2. With the pitch in Navi Mumbai quite helpful to the spinners, we expect her to bowl another good spell on Thursday.
