About the Match
A place at the top of the table awaits the winner of the BPL 2017 match between the Dhaka Dynamites and the Khulna Titans. This will be the second time the two teams meet this season where the first time resulted in a comfortable Dhaka Dynamites victory. Both teams have hit form now and are coming into this match on the back of some impressive victories.
After a shock defeat to the Sylhet Sixers in the opening game of this tournament, the Dhaka Dynamites have roared back into form. They won their first match by defeating the Khulna Titans and then took revenge by absolutely crushing the Sylhet Sixers in their most recent match.
Any memories of that first loss have been firmly banished.
There was not much more that Shahid Afridi could have done in his first match of the tournament than what he ended up doing. He took four wickets for 12 runs to ruin any chances of a Sylhet Sixers batting revival and then opened the batting to score 37 runs off just 17 deliveries.
Oh, he and Evin Lewis also scored five sixes a piece in a demonstration of some truly remarkable hitting.
The in-form Evin Lewis is fast establishing himself as the next Chris Gayle and showing that he too possesses a rare talent for dispatching cricket balls over the boundary.
The Dhaka Dynamites have a batting lineup that can be unstoppable on good days and extremely hard to beat even on their off days. Evin Lewis, Shahid Afridi, Cameron Delport, Shakib Al Hasan, and Kieron Pollard are all world class T20 players. They are all supported by some very promising domestic cricketers and a tail that can add useful runs.
The bowling has also gained an additional edge with Shahid Afridi making the playing eleven which was pretty sharp to begin with. Sunil Narine continues to befuddle the batsmen, Abu Hider finds himself in the wickets, and Shakib Al Hasan is no one to be sneered at either.
It is difficult to find a weakness in this team right now.
The Titans won a match that they were in serious trouble during thanks to some lusty late order hitting from Craig Braithwaite and Ariful Haque. While that comeback should be celebrated, it should not take away from the fact that the Titans were in a position from where they would have lost more often than not.
Nazmul Shanto continues to have a poor season at the top and only has a best score of 9 so far. Chadwick Walton is proving to be unreliable while Rilee Rossow is just batting too low down the order in our opinion.
Even Mahmudullah, who was supposed to be the backbone of this side, ends up finding himself in a situation of salvaging the innings rather than going out there and expressing himself freely.
A rejig of the batting order must be considered for the Khulna Titans. The six-hitting exploits of Craig Braithwaite and Ariful Haque must be celebrated as well and should give the top-order some confidence too.
We think that most important batsman for the Titans in this match is going to be Michael Klinger. He has started the tournament well and could provide the solidity needed at the top.
The bowling for the Titans is being led by two extremely impressive young pacers. Joffra Archer has been anointed for eventual England colors as he cranks up the pace close to 150 km/h while Abu Jayed may also leapfrog a few other contenders for a Bangladesh call-up if he continues to bowl like he has been.
With six wickets in the tournament so far, Abu Jayed is the leading wicket-taker for the Khulna Titans at the moment. In this match, though, against some of the hardest hitters of the ball, Joffra Archer’s extra pace will be most crucial to the Titans chances.
Pitch and Conditions
The pitch at Mirpur has been playing a little slow so far bringing the spinners into play but batsmen that have adjusted to the pace have also done extremely well. We expect scores of about 160-170 to be very difficult to chase in most games.
The weather forecast at the moment suggests that we should have an uninterrupted match.
The Dhaka Dynamites are too heavily loaded and in too good a form to bet against.
