About the Match
The traditional rivalry between Delhi and Mumbai will be rekindled as Mumbai travel to Mumbai and attempt to secure their top spot on the league table. Delhi, on the other hand, has everything to play for as their hopes of making the knockout stages are still alive.
Delhi has won its last two matches at home and has recovered from being bowled out for 67 against the Kings 11 to put in two absolutely brilliant batting performances. The real positive from these performances has been the fact that all their batsmen have contributed. Karun Nair has shown glimpses of form at the top of the order, even though he has not got a big one, while Sanju Samson, Rishabh Pant, Shreyas Iyer and Corey Anderson have provided some awesome power across the batting order.
There is also a perceptible change in mindset as the Delhi batsmen have decided to play positively irrespective of the stage of the game.
Mumbai will be very wary of the hitting capabilities of Pant, Samson, Anderson and Morris, who will probably make a comeback at the expense of Pat Cummins.
What has also helped Delhi has been the fact that they have chased in both the matches. The Feroze Shah Kotla is a small ground with fast outfields and defending here can be very difficult. There is no doubt in our minds that the team winning the toss will choose to field, especially as dew might be a factor later on as well.
The bowling for Delhi has been very effective with Rabada taking wickets up front, Mishra doing a good job in the middle stages and the likes of Anderson, Cummins, Nadeem, Shami and Morris also very effective at picking up wickets.
As far as the fielding goes, though, there is probably no other team that has been so generous to the opposition as Delhi has been. Dropped catches at crucial stages detract from their bowling efforts and cause them to chase totals much higher than they otherwise would have.
Against a top side like Mumbai, Delhi will have to make sure that they are at their best.
Mumbai is sitting pretty at the top of the table and certain of playing in the playoffs this year. Their form has been awesome and every single person in their team has contributed to the cause. This has meant that even someone like Lasith Malinga was not been missed by the Mumbai Indians when he missed matches.
If Rishabh Pant has been Delhi’s find this season then Nitish Rana has done the job for Mumbai. Rana is also an aggressive young left-hander that has a special ability to clear the field with ease. He has dropped off in form a little over the last few matches but the small Kotla ground could just be the motivation he needs to get back in top gear.
Jos Buttler has only played one inning of substance, his partner at the top, Parthiv Patel has been good without being special, Rohit Sharma has had a few good innings interspersed with low scores but it is the middle order that has really provided the heft to the Mumbai Indians.
Kieron Pollard, Krunal Pandya, and Hardik Pandya have been crucial with the bat and bailed their team out on more than one occasion. Their form has allowed the top order’s inconsistency to be overlooked and in fact given them the freedom to play without fear.
Mumbai’s bowling has been brilliant as well. Jasprit Bumrah showed in the super over against the Lions why he is regarded as one of the best death bowlers in the world. Mitchell McClenaghan has been picking wickets with regularity while Krunal Pandya and Harbhajan Singh have been very economical in the middle.
Harbhajan Singh has missed a couple of matches due to injury and been replaced by Karn Sharma, something that could play a huge role in the match against Delhi.
Mumbai will go into this match knowing that they have nothing to lose, however, they would be very keen to win against Delhi, a city that they have been traditional rivals with in almost every field of life.
Head To Head
The two teams have met each other 19 times in which Mumbai has a small advantage of 10-9. At the Kotla though, Mumbai has not beaten Delhi since 2011.
We think that the Delhi team is peaking at the right time and has what it takes to beat Mumbai.
