About the Match
Delhi Daredevils and Royal Challengers Bangalore occupy the sixth and eighth positions respectively in the IPL points table. These two teams will now take on each other in the 56th match of the league at Delhi on 14th May. Both Delhi and Bangalore are out of contention for a playoff berth but would want to finish this year’s campaign on a winning note.
Delhi Daredevils have got six wins out of the thirteen games they have played so far. All six of their wins have been pretty convincing affairs, but most of their losses have been in tight games, where the results could have easily been different had some small moments fallen in place for them.
Delhi started off their campaign with a closely fought defeat against Bangalore, but in their next two games, against Pune and Punjab, Delhi got convincing wins with a great century from Sanju Samson against Pune and a fantastic all-round display from Corey Anderson against Punjab.
Delhi could not maintain the momentum of these two wins though and went on to lose their next five games against Kolkata, Hyderabad, Mumbai, Kolkata and Punjab. But in their next two games, against Hyderabad and Gujarat, Delhi was able to get two superb wins on the back of some stunning batting from their young batsmen.
It was looking like Delhi would be able to conjure a streak here and make a play for a top-four finish, but their hopes were crushed by a rampaging Mumbai. However, an out of contention Delhi have showcased what they are capable of in their last two matches with victories against Gujarat and Pune.
The Delhi bowling attack has remained reasonably dependable and potent throughout the season, with Zaheer Khan, Cummins, Shahbaz Nadeem, Amit Mishra, Chris Morris and Corey Anderson all performing their roles efficiently in different games. It has been their batting which has remained highly inconsistent and this has cost them dearly in the form of an early exit from the tournament.
Royal Challengers Bangalore
Royal Challengers Bangalore have had a really poor season this year. They have won only two matches in thirteen games, and are right at the bottom of the points table. Their two wins have come against Delhi and Gujarat, but even these wins were not the most dominant performances.
They have lost ten of their other games, against Hyderabad, Punjab, Mumbai, Pune, Kolkata, Gujarat, Pune, Mumbai, Punjab and Kolkata, and one of their games, their second of the season against Hyderabad, was washed out due to persistent rain.
Royal Challengers spent their first few matches without their captain Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers owing to fitness issues. The results have not improved much even after their return though, and the issue for RCB has been an overdependence on these players. Bangalore was thoroughly outplayed by Kolkata in their last game. They simply have been unable to find wins in any possible way throughout the season.
Bangalore does no longer stand a chance of making it to the playoffs. Their bowling has been a weakness throughout, but the batting has not been able to cover up for it. They have suffered as a result and now look likely to finish at the bottom.
Delhi and Bangalore are facing each other for the second time this season, and quite surprisingly, Bangalore had won the first encounter. But this match is being held in Delhi, and so Daredevils will have the home advantage. In addition to the home advantage, Delhi has also had a better season and brings the momentum of two good wins into this game, and this gives them an upper hand in this contest.
