About the Match
Feroz Shah Kotla will see the home side Delhi Daredevils pitted against the formidable and in-form Kings XI Punjab on 19 May, with the Kings heading the points table with 16 points from 10 matches, whereas the Daredevils at the bottom of the table with 4 points from 11 matches. Except for the home ground advantage and an almost certain result of not making it to the next level, the Daredevils have nothing to lose and they will avail every opportunity to cut loose and create an embarrassing situation for the guests. Punjab on the other hand will look to continue leading the rest of the teams and will surely make it difficult for Delhi to earn some redemption here.
They have good resources but they are not clicking as a team to have results in their favor; Pietersen has tried shuffling the batting order, coming himself to open the innings in the last match against Rajasthan Royals, but the players have not responded well with the batsmen failing to raise their level of the game. Except for Tiwary, who made a valuable 61 off 44 balls, nobody else stayed at the wicket, to build good partnerships. The bowlers are also lacking in the strike power, allowing the Royals to pile up a big total of 200+; Duminy, Tahir and Nadeem are bowling effectively and the others who are brought in to complete the overs are not able to control the batsmen, thus letting the team down. Ross Taylor is not in good form and that is evident from the contribution of the middle order; the team is not in a positive mind to redeem themselves from the losses they suffered early in the tournament and thus continue to linger at the bottom of the table, with no chances to recover.
Kings XI Punjab
From nowhere in the previous IPL editions, the team is heading the points table from the word go and they continue to pile up huge totals batting first or thrash any challenge put up by other teams in contention. A surprise loss to the Mumbai Indians and a huge defeat at the hands of Kolkata Knight Riders at Cuttack, the Kings didn’t let the failures shadow the flavor of success so far. With Chennai Super Kings also having 16 points from 10 matches, they have managed to be at the top, with a better NRR, giving them a psychological advantage over other teams closely behind. Saha, Maxwell, Miller and Bailey continue to play their heroics with the bat in every game; Sandeep Sharma and Johnson continue playing havoc on opposing batsmen, with adequate support by other slow bowlers. The present contest will bring cheers to the crowd only if the team bats first and piles up a huge total with its attacking batting strength, though it may not be required against the Daredevils.
With the form and performance so far, this should not be a big challenge to the Kings XI team and the match should not be a contest at all. While Delhi might give a strong fight especially since they have nothing to lose, we feel that the Kings XI is destined to pocket 2 more points from this contest too.
