About the Match
In this match of the NatWest T20 Blast 2017, we have one of the form teams of the tournament, Derbyshire, take on one the pre tournament favorites, Nottinghamshire. Derbyshire is right at the top of the North Group table while Nottinghamshire is just outside the top 4. With a table as closely packed as this though none of these teams can take it easy.
The Falcons have never been to the knockout stages of the NatWest T20 Blast before and it is understandable that the pressure will continue to rise as they go deeper into the tournament. John Wright though seems to have put together a bunch of players that are reveling in this pressure of expectation.
The team had put together some excellent bowlers in Matt Henry, Hardus Viljoen, and Imran Tahir but it is the all-round performance of Wayne Madsen that is propelling them through the tournament.
Madsen is the highest scorer in the tournament right now with 402 runs to his name and he also has 9 wickets from 31 overs bowled this season. There is no doubt that any team looking to beat Derbyshire has to neutralize the threat of Wayne Madsen.
Supporting him on the batting front has been Luis Reece with 290 runs to his name and Billy Godleman with 248 runs so far. In fact, it was Godleman’s 67 in the last game that helped Derbyshire overcome a stiff target against Yorkshire.
Derbyshire is in excellent form right now and with their batting supporting the dependably good bowling, it is not difficult to see them build on this excellent start to the tournament.
The Outlaws would have been very disappointed that rain played spoilsport in their match after they had scored 210 against Leicestershire. These high scores have become pretty routine for Nottinghamshire as their openers Rikki Wessels and Alex Hales continue to dominate the tournament.
Wessels is the third highest scorer in the tournament right now with 347 runs to his name and Hales is just 4 runs behind at 343. The other batsmen like Brendan Taylor, Dan Christian, Moores and Mullaney have also contributed with quick runs in most matches.
There are six batsmen in their line-up that have more than five sixes to their name, something that will be hard to find in most other teams.
This Outlaws batting lineup is going to come up against a tough challenge in Derbyshire’s bowlers but there is no doubt that they have the talent in them to come up trumps.
Samit Patel has been the best bowler for the Outlaws providing them wickets as well as control in the middle. Harry Gurney and Ish Sodhi are the others that will try take responsibility of pegging back the Derbyshire batsmen in an evenly matched contest.
Pitch and Conditions
The forecast for the match is sunny and clear skies, which has become a bit of rarity in this tournament. The pitch at Durham will favor the batsmen and the short boundaries should appeal to big hitters on both sides.
A total of 180 will be par on this pitch.
