About the Match
Derbyshire Falcons continues to languish at the bottom of the table with only one point from 7 matches, the only team without a win so far and are now taking on the Warwicks, who have 9 points from 7 matches on 27th June at the Oval with Warwick being closely positioned behind table leaders Worcestershire and Lancashire. Derbyshire is not able to find success even though the team made 179 for 7 in the last match against Nottinghamshire as the opponent outsmarted them by building an imposing target of 206 which they failed to chase, whereas, Warwickshire lost the low scoring match against Worcestershire at, failing to defend their 133 for 8. This contest will be a turning point for the Warwickshire Bears, who can try to surpass the table toppers by winning this match but Derbyshire too will be eager to make a comeback with a much-needed win here.
They seemed to have made a wrong decision in asking the Notts to bat first after winning the toss on 20th, wherein the opponent erected too tall a target which was too much to accomplish. They deployed 7 of their team members in attacking the Notts, none of them able to make headway, with Wessels in full form, frustrating the Derbyshire bowlers. When they began their chase for reaching 206, they lost wickets at regular intervals, except for a good knock of 54 off 38 balls by Cross and 65 off 36 balls by Madsen, which contributed for a healthy 4th wicket partnership of 103 when the 18th over was in progress. Losing 3 more wickets in the space of 16 balls adding only 19 runs meant doom for the Derbies, costing them the match even after scoring 179 for 7. They had too long a tail, failing to sustain the pressure to achieve the required run rate. Derbyshire needs to improve its bowling by Turner, Footit, Hughes and North instead of exposing the entire team and allowing the opponents to dominate.
In their last league match against Worcestershire, Warwicks were put into bat with opener Chopra, who has been consistently opening the innings, failing to keep partner with Porterfield and getting dismissed for just 5 off 9 balls. Trott and Shoaib contributed 39 off 38 balls and 50 off 40 balls respectively to take the team to a respectable total of 133 for 8; the target looked too low for the Worcestershire team, who dominated the less than ordinary bowling attack by Shoaib, Javid, Woakes, Gordon and Patel to clinch the match with a loss of only 2 wickets with 5.3 overs to spare. Warwicks will have this defeat in the back of their mind but they will do well to draw lessons from the loss and take remedial measures for improving their bowling attack supported by the men on the field to gain supremacy over the leading teams.
Derbyshire players have not proved themselves to be good fighters and they may not be able to sustain the onslaught by the Warwickshire team here and hence we think that the Warwickshire Bears go in as clear favorites to win this match.
