About the Match
Derbyshire, badly off with 1 point from 5 matches at the bottom of the table is pitted against the North Division leader Worcestershire who have 8 points from 6 matches, having lost 2 against 4 wins. Derby had a drubbing against Nottinghamshire in the last match which they lost by 5 wickets with 19 balls to spare, failing to defend a well-made 164 for 7 whereas the Worcestershire team won against Leicestershire by 5 wickets with 4 balls to spare. The teams will have a lot on their minds when they go out in the middle on Friday and will try all kinds of tactics to climb up the ladder.
Worcestershire was made to field first as they lost the toss against Leicestershire and their bowlers maintained an upper hand as the Leices batsmen failed to maintain rhythmic partnerships after the fall of each wicket, though the openers gave a breezy start. Russell, Ajmal, Mitchell and Munro bowled effectively to contain the batsmen and hence restricted them to 164 for 6. Worcestershire maintained a steady run chase and built healthy partnerships in a planned manner with Mitchell top scoring smashing 61 off 50 balls, holding one end. Cadmore, Munro and Whitely played good support role to achieve the target with 4 balls to spare losing only 5 wickets; they demonstrated a very good team spirit and purpose to win, thereby exposing the weak bowling attack by the Leicestershire team. Derbyshire does not have bowlers who can penetrate the defense of the Worcestershire batsmen and unless they commit suicidal errors, this match should not be difficult to handle.
The batting strength of the Derby team is quite capable of putting sufficient runs on board but the bowling is so weak that any total they make will be surely achievable by the opposition with ease. Opting to bat first on winning the toss, Madsen and North combined well to build a healthy score against Nottinghamshire in their last league match though the opening pair of Moore and Durston separated without a run on board, Moore being dismissed by Gurney with the very 1st ball. North made 57 off 47 deliveries and Madsen 36 off 27 balls with a cool head and took the team to a respectable total of 164 for 7. However, the Notts demolished the bowling attack and reached the target losing only 5 wickets and 19 balls yet to be bowled. Now the team is facing a tougher match against Worcestershire who are much better placed compared to the rest of the teams in the North Division and have a very strong batting line up of Mitchell, Cadmore and Munro adequately supported by a bowling attack led by Shanty, Russel, Ajmal and Mitchell. Unless the Derbies come out with a surprising performance, beyond par, they are destined to face an embarrassing result.
If the demonstrated performances are any indicator, the Worcs clearly go in as favorites and we do not perceive any other result than a thumping win to the Worcestershire team.
