Alright then. We are finally at the stage that everyone following the Lanka Premier League 2020 was waiting for. We have our four semi-finalists after an incredible spell of ups and downs in the last few matches. The only remaining match of the tournament is going to be of little significance as the semi-finalists are already certain. Having said that, it will govern the top of the table position.
Colombo Kings and Dambulla Viikings are set to take on each other in the final league match of LPL. Both sides have done fairly well in the tournament so far and are currently the top two teams on the ladder. Even though the result of this match is not going to have a significant impact on the fortunes of the two teams, the two teams are likely to come out hard at each other in this battle to prove their supremacy. The match is to be played at Mahinda Rajapaksa International Stadium, Hambantota, on 11th December 2020.
Dambulla Viikings never had the star-power to pull them, but given that they are now at the top of the table, it is certainly a commendable effort on their side. Even though they occupy the top of the table position with 11 points to their name, their net run-rate of -0.111 suggests that they haven't been as dominating.
Their recent win came against Galle Gladiators, who fumbled after pushing them into a position from where they could have dictated terms. Taking nothing away from the Viikings, they certainly did well to execute their plans despite being behind the eight-ball halfway through their chase. Samiullah Shinwari played a blinder of an innings to propel Viikings to a win as he smashed 46 off 20 deliveries. That innings also highlighted the importance of having depth in the batting order.
Chasing an almost par score, the Viikings looked all lost after losing Dasun Shanaka and did well to get home from there. Earlier on the day, their bowlers didn't look as penetrative as they had in the tournament before and that allowed Gladiators to rack up a decent total despite losing wickets at regular intervals. It was also surprising to see Shanaka use as many as seven bowlers and bring part-timers in when the front-line bowlers were doing an excellent job.
All in all, Dambulla Viikings may not be having star-power to push them, but they certainly have an excellent team that is more than the sum of its parts. They bat deep and that could be a crucial factor in this upcoming encounter. The Kings aren't going to be an easy to defeat side, but if Dambulla Viikings put their best foot forward, they should be able to come out on top.
Niroshan Dickwella, WU Tharanga, Angelo Perera, Samit Patel, Dasun Shanaka, Samiullah Shenwari, Pulina Tharanga, Anwar Ali, PM Pushpakumara, Lahiru Kumara, Kavindu Nadeeshan.
The result of the recent match between Colombo Kings and Jaffna Stallions had many implications. One, it ensured that Jaffna Stallions, after playing so well in the tournament, do not finish among the top two sides. Two, it allowed Colombo Kings an opportunity to take the top of the table position with a win in their upcoming encounter.
While the margin of Colombo's recent win is minuscule, it doesn't really tell the complete story. Laurie Evans smashed a fantastic hundred in the first innings to take Colombo Kings to 173. There wasn't much contribution from the rest of the batting order, but it is nothing to worry about as the Kings had been in incredible form in the build-up to this match.
The total of 173 was just about par for the Kings, but their bowlers ensured that they always stayed ahead in the game. There was a slight scare from the way Perera and Malik batted for Stallions towards the end, but the Kings eventually won the match by six runs. Even though Andre Russell was extremely expensive for the Kings, his crucial breakthroughs allowed Kings to keep their noses ahead. Isuru Udana and Qais Ahmed were the stand-out bowlers for the Kings on the day.
All in all, a loss against the Gladiators was perhaps the only major blip in the Kings' campaign so far. However, they took that loss well and bounced back beautifully. They are now eying that top of the table position and given the way they're playing, it shouldn't be too difficult to achieve.
Dinesh Chandimal, Laurie Evans, Daniel Bell-Drummond, Angelo Mathews, Thikshila de Silva, Lahiru Udara, Ashan Priyanjan, Qais Ahmad, PHT Kaushal, PVD Chameera, Himesh Ramanayake.

Even though the match is not as important as the other recent matches have been, both sides would want to register wins here before moving to the knockouts. A win here will impart confidence as well as momentum to the winning side and that is what both sides will be aiming for. Going by the combination of the two teams on paper and their performances in the tournament so far, Colombo Kings are firm favorites to emerge on top in the final league game of LPL 2020.
