We are just around the half-way mark in the Lanka Premier League and a slowly but surely a clear line of separation is emerging in the points table. The top three teams are sitting pretty with a difference of two points between two consecutive. Surprisingly, the state of the points table is similar as well with the Jaffna Stallions team sitting at the top and each subsequent team on the points table having two points less than the one above them.
Galle Gladiators are at the bottom of the points table and will have to take off from here if they want to keep their chances to qualify for the semis alive. Their next assignment is not going to be easy by any means as they take on Dambulla Viiking, who have done exceedingly well in the tournament so far. The match between the two sides is to be played at Mahinda Rajapaksa International Cricket Stadium, Hambantota on 5th December 2020.
Exactly contrary to the Gladiators' performance, the Viikings have done pretty well so far and their second position on the points table reflects that. As it stands, the Viikings have six points to their name in four matches, but their net run-rate of -0.394 suggests that the magnitude of their loss was way more than the combined magnitude of the wins they have posted thus far.
Dambulla Viikings managed to register an important win in their most recent assignment, which wasn't easy by any stretch of the imagination. Angelo Perera proved to be the chief architect of their win as Viiking ran past Kandy Tuskers' total. He was ably assisted by Dasun Shanaka, who added 33 runs off 23 deliveries.
With the ball, however, the Viikings were found a bit short of where they would have wanted to be. Despite the fact that a few of their bowlers putting in brilliant performances. Kasun Rajitha, Samit Patel, and Malinda Pushpakumara were brilliant as they together picked up five wickets for 62 runs in their 11 overs combined, but there was no support whatsoever from the rest of their bowlers.
On paper as well, the Viikings' bowling appears to be a little to over-reliant on a couple of bowlers. However, they seem to be well-equipped with the bat given the depth they have in batting. With the momentum they have, beating them shouldn't be easy for the Gladiators, who aren't really in the form they want to be in.
Niroshan Dickwella, WU Tharanga, Angelo Perera, Samit Patel, Dasun Shanaka, Samiullah Shenwari, Anwar Ali, Ramesh Mendis, PM Pushpakumara, Kasun Rajitha, S Tyagi.
Galle Gladiators' campaign in the tournament turned from bad to worse as they faced yet another defeat in the tournament. With that loss, their tally of losses added up to four. They are yet to win a match in the tournament and another loss here will make their chances to qualify to the next round extremely bleak. Apart from the string of losses that they have, their net run-rate of -1.113 could prove to be a distinguishing as well.
Even though the Gladiators are losing their matches regularly, its not that they have performed poorly. However, the performances from their players have been sporadic. They've lacked team effort in all of their games and that was visible in the last match as well. Danushka Ganthilaka took them to a respectable total with cameos from Ahsan Ali, Chadwick Walton, and Azam Khan, but on the whole, the Gladiators faltered in important moments.
On paper, they have a terrific team that covers all bases. However, their on-field performance doesn't seem to be complementing their on-paper lineup. Hazratullah Zazai and Danusha Gunathalika are a pretty good pair at the top of the order and with the likes of Ahsan Ali, Chadwick Walton, and Shahid Afridi available, their batting seems good. Their bowling has an excellent amalgamation of wicket-taking bowlers and the bowlers who can contain the opposition. Shahid Afridi, Mohammad Amir, Lakshan Sandakan, and Akila Dananjaya have all proved their mettle in international cricket and have plenty of experience up their sleeve.
All in all, the Gladiators are a lot better team than it seems by the way it is at the ladder. However, momentum plays a crucial role in this format of the game and that is something that the Gladiators do not have. They'd need to play out of their skins and if they can do that, the Viiking will have their work cut out.
Danushka Gunathilaka, Ahsan Ali, Azam Khan, Bhanuka Rajapaksa, CAK Walton, TAM Siriwardana, Shehan Jayasuriya, Dhananjaya Lakshan, Lakshan Sandakan, Mohammad Amir, Asitha Fernando.

Going by the form of the two sides, the Viikings are pretty much ahead between the two sides. Momentum plays a crucial role in this format of the game and the Viikings will be hoping that they continue to build on the momentum. On the other hand, Galle Gladiators will be desperate for a win and are expected to come out all guns blazing. Given that and the fact that the Gladiators are a better team between the two on paper, an upset is certainly on the cards here. Bet on Galle Gladiators to emerge on top in this all-important encounter.
