It was a rather anti-climatic end of Lanka Premier League for Colombo Kings who, despite playing so well in the league stage, failed to make it to the finale. They were recently defeated by Galle Gladiators who now appear to be peaking just at the right time. The win for Galle Gladiators in the first semifinal makes the second one even more interesting.
The second final of the LPL 2020 is to be played between Dambulla Viiking and Jaffna Stallions, the two teams that finished at the second and the third spot respectively. It is scheduled to be played on 14th December at Mahinda Rajapaksa International Cricket Stadium, Sooriyawewa, Hambantota.
Dambulla Viikings have had a rather strange tournament so far. While they were placed at the second spot on the points table after the end of the group stage, they were far from clinical. They won five out of their eight matches and finished the league stage with 11 points to their name.
The Viikings have relied heavily on individual flashes of brilliance and that has worked for them pretty well for them. Niroshan Dickwell and Samit Patel have done well for them at the top of the order, but their stand-out performer without a doubt has been Dasun Shanaka. Shanaka has contributed in both the departments of the game and has more often than not made a game-changing contribution.
They also showed the depth in their batting lineup and their recent win over Galle Gladiators was an example of that. Samiullah Shinwari played a blinder down the order to take his time to a win from a nearly lost situation.
In the bowling department, however, the Viikings appear to be a little lost. They don't have match-winning bowlers and seem to be depending heavily on Anwar Ali. We have seen other bowlers contributing for them as well, but those contributions haven't been as consistent as they would have liked them to be.
Overall, the Viiking too have a decent unit, but bowling could be a problem should Stallions' batsmen get going. Having said that, they have a batting lineup capable of chasing totals of tall orders and might well be enough to cover up for their bowling attack. If they are able to do that, the Stallions will be in for an unanticipated surprise.
Niroshan Dickwella, Samit Patel, WU Tharanga, Angelo Perera, Dasun Shanaka, Ramesh Mendis, Samiullah Shenwari, PM Pushpakumara, Kasun Rajitha, Anwar Ali, Lahiru Kumara.
Even though the Stallions finished on the third position at the ladder, they were far better than what their position suggests. A better metric to evaluate their overall performance would be the net run-rate, which they have as 0.788 - the best in the tournament. Other than that, they won four of their seven completed matches and lost three. One of the matches that they played was abandoned without any result.
Overall, the Stallions have done an impressive job in the tournament so far with their experienced all-rounders leading their charge. Wanindu Hasaranga and Thisara Perera have been two stand-out performers for them and a lot will depend on them in the upcoming fixture. Other than them, we have seen Shoaib Malik and Avishka Fernando chip in with some crucial contributions.
On paper, they have a terrific side with a superb mixture of youngsters and veterans. While Avishka Fernando can exert pressure with his exuberance at the top, they have Shoaib Malik as a calming factor in the middle of their batting order. Their bowling looks better. They have Duanne Olivier, Suranga Lakmal, and Wanindu Hasaranga and terrific form with a wide array of players capable of playing supporting roles available.
All in all, the Stallions have a decent unit and did justice to their on-paper strength for the most part of the tournament. They lost the plot towards the end of the league stage and if they can play their best cricket in the upcoming match, the Viikings will have their work cut out.
Johnson Charles, Avishka Fernando, Charith Asalanka, Shoaib Malik, Chaturanga de Silva, Thisara Perera, Wanidu Hasaranga, Dhananjaya de Silva, Suranga Lakmal, Usman Khan, Duanne Olivier.

Dambulla Viiking and Jaffna Stallions are perhaps at the extreme ends as far as off-field strategy is concerned. While the Viiking are heavily dependent on individuals to take them home, the Stallions are reliant more on team-effort. That difference was well visible in the league stage as well. Considering that the upcoming game is a high-pressure fixture, relying too heavily on individual brilliance could be a challenge for Dambulla Viiking. The Stallions, on the other hand, have a better-balanced side and seem better equipped to handle the pressure of a semifinal. For that reason, we believe that the Stallions will emerge as winners in this match and meet Galle Gladiators in the grand finale of the tournament.
