The group stages of the TNPL have been done and dusted with and we have an all-new lineup of teams that have qualified for the knockouts. Finishing the top-2 has a major advantage since teams get two chances of qualifying for the finals. Dindigul Dragons and Madurai Panthers will play each other in the first qualifier, with the loser going on to play the second qualifier against the winner of the eliminator.
The winner, of course, moves on to the finals. There is everything to play for in this match but really nothing to lose. We hope this will allow both teams to express themselves freely.
5 wins from 7 matches and an absolutely crushing win over the Chepauk Super Gillies in their last match puts the Dindigul Dragons in an excellent frame of mind coming into the knockouts. The Dindigul Dragons are the bookmaker's favorites and a lot of people have been backing them as title contenders for quite some time now.
The team has banked on N Jagadeesan for its runs this season and he has not disappointed. 302 runs, three not outs, and a strike rate of 134.22 are excellent figures. He has scored three fifties to be the backbone of this lineup. There is no question that his will be the wicket that Madurai will be desperate for.
Runs have also flowed from the bat of R Vivek, NS Chaturved, and Hari Nishanth. The three are also responsible for hitting the bulk of the sixes for the Dragons. Any one of them can swing the game in their team's favor and Madurai would do well not to concentrate on Jagadeesan alone.
The bowling is one area where we feel the Dindigul Dragons may be a little vulnerable. M Abhinav, M Mohammed, and Adithya Arun will lead the bowling attack. None of the bowlers has had an outstanding season and the bowling attack as a whole needs its batsmen to provide a cushion for them.
If the Dindigul Dragons are unable to register a big total then they could be in some trouble.
Narayan Jagadeesan, C Hari Nishanth, R Vivek, NS Chaturved, B Anirudh Sita Ram, M Mohammed, Ramalingam Rohit, M Abhinav, M Silambarasan, H Trilok Nag, Varun M Totadri.
The Siechem Madurai Panthers suffered a complete batting collapse in its last match and was unable to put up any sort of resistance against the Lyca Kovai Kings. That performance can be excused a little since the Panthers had already locked up their place in the top-2 so maybe its players took it a little easy.
One thing is for sure that the loss in the last game would have given the Madurai Panthers the wakeup call it needed.
Like the Dindigul Dragons, one batsman has stood out for the Madurai Panthers as well. Arun Karthik has 307 runs in the tournament and has been extremely consistent. He has four fifties from seven innings and is going to be the biggest wicket for the opposition.
The aggressive Sargunam, Chandran, Kousik, and Rohit are the other players that have contributed with the bat. The Madurai Panthers will need one of these players to stand up and support Arun Karthik in this crucial match because the Dindigul Dragons is a very strong batting team itself.
The bowling unit for the Panthers has done slightly better than the Dragons. Rahil Shah with 8 wickets is the leading bowler but he has good support from Chakravarthi, Kousik, and Tanwar. If this bowling attack can get into the Dindigul Dragons batting early then they may be able to restrict them to a par total.
Arun Karthik, D Rohit, XT Sargunam, R Karthikeyan, Shijit Chandran, R Nilesh Subramanian, Jagatheesan Kousik, RS Jaganath Sinivas, AB Tanwar, Varun Chakravathi, Rahil Shah.
The team winning the toss is likely to bat first
The conditions in Tirunelveli are a little slow and not the best for batting right now. Hopefully, the groundsman would have been able to water the pitch and roll it to get some hardness back into the surface. The new ball will be very crucial for scoring runs as it is only going to become more difficult afterward.
A score of around 160 should be considered par.
We are backing the underdog in this one due to its superior bowling attack. Back the Siechem Madurai Panthers to win.
