IPL 2019 may have everyone’s attention but there is another T20 competition about to get underway. The CSA T20 Challenge 2019 may not have the same big names as the IPL but it is still a very interesting tournament to follow. A number of South African players that were not picked for the IPL or are on the cusp of international selection will be looking to make their mark in this tournament.
The second match of the CSA T20 Challenge 2019 will be played between the Dolphins and the Knights at Kingsmead, Durban. Both sides have some exciting players to look forward to and we expect the match to be a close one.
The Dolphins are expected to be a force in the CSA T20 challenge. They have some very good T20 players in their midst, a couple of whom are current South African internationals, and some who are among the most consistent performers in domestic cricket.
These names include Khaya Zondo, Morne van Wyk, Robbie Frylinck, Andile Phehlukwayo, Sarel Erwee, and Vaughn van Jaarsveld.
Khaya Zondo is an attacking batsman and he should be one of the biggest threats to any side that come up against them. He, along with Morne van Wyk, and Sarel Erwee will lead the batting assault for the Dolphins. Morne van Wyk has emerged as a prolific T20 scorer in the last few seasons and its almost like knowing his South African international career is over has helped lift the shackles off of him.
Robbie Frylinck has been making waves in T20 leagues around the world with his death bowling and power hitting down the order. With Andile Phehlukwayo also in the side, the Dolphins have an inherent balance that will give them an advantage.
Phehlukwayo has been batting in the top-order and bowls his full quota of overs in almost every match. He is one of the most improved players we have seen in the South African set-up, as his performances against Pakistan showed.
Vaugh van Jaarsveld is the most recognizable name in the bowling department but some promising players like Ethan Bosch, Sibonel Makhanya, and Okule Cele are also present in the squad.
Sarel Erwee, Mv Wyk, C Chetty, Khaya Zondo, Marques Ackerman, Sibonelo Makhanya, K Maharaj, Eathan Bosch, P Subrayen, Lwandiswa Zuma, D Dupavillon.
The Knights have struggled in domestic competitions this year and it does not look like things are going to get too much easier in the CSA T20 Challenge either. The side is missing some of the established stars that the other teams have at their disposal and even the domestic performers are not quite kicking the doors down towards national selection.
There is still some quality there to work with, though.
Grant Mokoena, Ryan McLaren, Patrick Kruger, Petrus van Biljon, and Eddie Leie are some very talented players. All of them, with the exception of McLaren, lack the experience of playing in big match situations under the spotlight and that is something they will have to get used to quickly.
Grant Mokoena was in the runs during the 50 over tournament and can be expected to carry some of that form in the 20 over game as well. We see power hitting as a concern in this side. Rudi Second and Keegan Petersen can hit a long ball but getting the run-rate boost in the last few overs may be difficult.
The bowlers will have to be at their best to keep the Knights in the contest. It is not inconceivable to see the bowlers having to defend some par or below-par totals and so they will need to make the opposition work for every single run.
Eddie Leie and Shadley van Schalkwyk are the two bowlers that will have to lead the attack from the front. Both of them have tasted some T20 success in the past and have the necessary tools to be able to get the job done.
If the Knights can find one or maybe even two breakout young performers from their squad then their chances of success go up manifold.
Patrick Kruger, AR Swanepoel, Grant Mokoena, PJ van Biljon, Ryan McLaren, Shadley van Schalkwyk, Corne Dry, RS Second, AGS Gous, Eddie Leie, T Mnyaka.
The side winning the toss is expected to field first. Kingsmead is a ground where defending totals can be difficult and that is reflected in the stats as well.

The CSA T20 Challenge T20 match between the Dolphins and the Knights is going to be played at the Kingsmead, Durban. The weather forecast has predicted some rain during the day but it should hopefully clear up by the time the match gets underway.
The pitch in Durban is usually good for batting but can offer something to the fast bowlers as well. This is particularly true when there is some rain around the area. We still think a high scoring match should be likely unless there is a batting collapse in the first inning.
The Dolphins look like the superior side in this contest and should be able to win. They have the deeper batting lineup and the better bowling attack.
Back the Dolphins to win.
