About the Match
Dolphins defeated Titans by 89 runs in the last league match to finish 2nd on the table with 22 points; they will take on Cape Cobras, who finished 3rd with 22 points, in the 2nd Semi-Final at Durban on 14th December. Both teams have done well this season and will fight tooth and nail to keep their hopes alive; when they met each other previously, Dolphins had won the contest by 15 runs through DLS method. Cobras recently suffered defeat against Warriors by 18 runs, and will be determined to make amends. It needs to be seen which team can keep a cool head above its shoulders and win this match on Thursday.
Batting first against Titans, Morne van Wyk posted a well-made 67 off 41 while Dane Vilas, Khaya Zondo and Jaarsveld kept the scoreboard ticking to take the total to 168. Spinners Imran Tahir, P Subrayen and Keshav Maharaj struck at regular intervals to take 2 wickets each; the pacers too contributed with consistent breakthroughs with Robbie Frylinck, M Shezi and Andile Phehlukwayo taking a wicket each. Khaya Zondo also used his spin skills to dismiss one opponent and help win the match by 89 runs.
Against Knights, the batsmen easily chased down 169 runs thanks to a superb 70 by Morne van Wyk and a well-made half-century by Dane Vilas. Robbie Frylinck scored 27 runs off 14 deliveries, and is a strong all-rounder in the middle-order. Earlier, Imran Tahir and Keshav Maharaj took 3 wickets between them and pacer Andile Phehlukwayo dismissed one opponent to restrict the Knights to 168.
When they met Cobras in the beginning of the tournament, opener Sarel Erwee had built a solid foundation for the team by scoring an unbeaten 103. Khaya Zondo posted 67 while Dane Vilas scored 32 to take the total to a humungous 231 and win the match by 15 runs through DLS method. They have strong resources with bat and ball, who could pose a stiff challenge to Cobras here again.
Chasing 169 against Warriors, Hashim Amla and Richard Levi tried to build the foundation but could score only 30+ runs each. Players like JP Duminy, Temba Bavuma and George Linde were dismissed cheaply; Vernon Philander and Carlos Koyana tried to get the runs on board but couldn’t reach the target on time, losing the match by 18 runs. Earlier, George Linde dismissed 2 opponents to break the opening partnership while Nabe, Paterson and Kleinveldt took a wicket each.
They comfortably chased down 133 runs against Titans, with Richard Levi and Temba Bavuma scoring 27 and 29 runs respectively; JP Duminy did not impress with the bat but all-rounder Ferisco Adams posted 20 off 12 to steer the team towards victory by 3 wickets. Earlier, Dane Paterson took 3-28 while George Linde, Rory Kleinveldt, Ferisco Adams and M Nabe took 5 wickets in quick succession to stifle the opponents.
They had lost the match against Dolphins earlier and will be motivated to avenge the defeat now in this crucial match.
The Dolphins are in good form with bat and ball to continue with their winning momentum; Cobras are a talented lot, but we feel that the hard-hitting top-order of Dolphins will give them the edge to win here
