About the Match
Both Lions and Dolphins lost their respective matches against Titans and Warriors over the weekend, and they will now face off against each other on 16th November at Durban for the 5th match of the Ram Slam T20 Challenge. While the Lions failed to chase down a stiff target of 195 against Titans, the Dolphins faltered while batting first against Warriors and were able to muster only a lowly 115, which they couldn’t defend. The players will be motivated to win the upcoming game with a better performance on Wednesday; it needs to be seen which team can keep its nerves together to pull off a much-needed victory here.
The top-order batsmen failed to fire against Warriors with players like Cameron Delport, Khaya Zondo and Vaughn van Jaarsveld getting out for single digits; Morne van Wyk was able to score 22 runs while others down the order tried to get the runs flowing. Kyle Nipper, Cody Chetty and Robbie Frylinck got the scoreboard ticking but they could muster only 115.
Speedster Andile Phehlukwayo then put up a stunning performance by taking 2-3 in a show of discipline and skillful execution; he dismissed the top-order batsmen Ingram and Seyibokwe while Imran Tahir removed the in-form JJ Smuts but they couldn’t stop the opposition from scoring the winning runs. The batsmen’s dismal performance led to their humiliating defeat but they do have the resources to bounce back.
Overall, the Dolphins have talented players like Delport, Morne van Wyk, Jaarsveld and other all-rounders who can help build a good foundation whether batting first or during chase; the bowling squad is strong with in-form speedsters like Phehlukwayo, Shezi and Robbie Frylinck. Tahir leads the spin department and along with players like Nipper, they can try to outwit the Lions on Wednesday.
Chasing 195 runs, Rassie van der Dussen posted a heroic 51 off 28 but the others in the top and middle order couldn’t contribute much; all-rounder Hardus Viljoen tried to revive the innings by scoring an unbeaten 41 from 26 deliveries but his efforts went in vain as others failed to do well. Spinner Eddie Leie, pacers Hardus Viljoen and Matt McGillvray took 4 wickets between them but they gave away too many runs, leading to a massive target that brought them down.
The team has experienced batsmen like Reeza Hendricks, Bjorn Fortuin, Nicky van den Bergh, and Mosehle, who can try to strategize well against the Dolphins bowlers and get the big runs when needed. By building steady partnerships, they can focus on setting a huge total if batting first; and with the combination of pace and spin, the Lions can surely prove to be a tough nut to crack here.
The Lions have a well-balanced squad of experience and young talent that will try to put its best foot forward in the upcoming match, and try to conquer the challenges on the field.
Both teams have talented match-winners who can help their respective sides win here; although the contest could be well fought, we feel that Dolphins, with a strong batting line-up and a mix of young and experienced players, are better placed to conquer the turf on Sunday
