About the Match
Durham put up an all-round performance to register a stunning win against Gloucestershire by 19 runs; they will take on Yorkshire, who defeated Glamorgan massively by 90 runs to stay in the race for the title, in the 2nd Semi-Final of the NatWest T20 series on 20th August. They have played twice against each other during league stage, with each team winning one game. The contest will be a thrilling one as both sides have a strong contingent of in-form batsmen and bowlers, who can help their team dominate on the field and keep their hopes alive; it needs to be seen which team can overcome the other to get to the finals.
The batting line-up led by Mark Stoneman’s superb 61 gave Durham a solid foundation for posting 180 runs as the target against Gloucs; Jennings and Richardson contributed well and the bowlers then kept their nerves together to provide regular breakthroughs and help win the match by 19 runs.
Speedsters Mark Wood and Rushworth took 2 wickets each to contain the opposition while spinner Borthwick and paceman Jennings took a wicket each; an excellent display of fielding by Durham caused 4 run-outs in the Gloucs camp, leading to a scintillating win in the end. Durham has done well to use its resources well in crucial situations and they can be ruthless when it comes to giving away runs.
While the batsmen are in good form and can produce big starts if batting first or during chase, the bowling unit consisting of players like Borthwick, Wood, Jennings, Arshad, Collingwood and Rushworth, looks sharp and determined to put up a stiff challenge to Yorkshire here.
David Willey powered the innings batting first against Glamorgan to 180 with an outstanding 79 off 38 and he is a strong asset with bat and ball; Alex Lees, Jack Leaning, Adam Lyth and Bresnan can stabilize the innings from the top and middle-order while the lower order all-rounders like Plunkett and Rashid can help keep the scoreboard ticking.
The bowlers put up a phenomenal performance with spinner Adil Rashid registering figures of 4-26 in 3 overs; he was well supported by speedster Bresnan, who took 2 wickets and others combined well to provide quick breakthroughs to demolish Glamorgan to 90 all-out and win the match emphatically.
Pacemen Plunkett, Willey and Waite and spinners Rashid and Rafiq are in very good form and they can definitely make it difficult for Durham to score the big runs. The batsmen have also been performing consistently and with experienced players like Willey, Lees, Rhodes, Lyth, Leaning and others, Yorkshire can put up a challenging total if batting first or chase down a target convincingly.
Yorkshire had won the match against Durham last month in a big way by a margin of 49 runs and they will be eager to dominate here; on the other hand, Durham had outwitted Yorkshire in the beginning of the league and have resources to win the match again. Both sides have well-balanced batting and bowling squads and the contest will be evenly fought; however, we feel Yorkshire has the required firepower to win this semi-final match on Saturday.
