About the Match
Durham has 10 points from as many matches, winning 4 of them, and is playing against Yorkshire, which has 11 points from 10 matches played with 4 wins, on 11th July at Chester-le-Street. The two sides have just met on 2nd July at Leeds in which Durham had the last laugh with a thumping 28 run victory over the Yorks, defending a moderate total of 123. Will the Yorks be able to pay back this time around, depends how best they apply themselves and play with commitment.
Durham had the audacity to challenge Yorkshire by electing to set a target on winning the toss when they met on 2nd July at Leeds and after losing opener Stoneman for a duck with score at 5 at the end of the 1st over, they recovered to score 123 for 9 due to a courageous knock of 40 off 43 balls by Mustard and good support from Pringle and Breese. Hastings and Barthwaite helped to defend the total by claiming 3 and 2 wickets each with good support from Breese and Collingwood, thus bundling the Yorks for a paltry 95 humiliating them. Mustard has been opening the innings for Durham with success, as he played a solid knock of 54 off 27 balls, chasing a target of 125, opening the innings with Stoneman against lowly rated Derbyshire. They achieved the target by losing only 2 wickets in which Stokes also played a heroic role by smashing 49 off just 26 balls to record the win with just 13.2 overs. Again, Hastings did the damage by claiming 4 wickets to restrict the Derbies to just 125 with Arshad, Collingwood, Breese being among the wickets. The same opening pair of Mustard and Stoneman had given a good start with 53 runs for the 1st wicket against Leicestershire earlier on 20th June at Chester-le Street in a losing match.
Playing back to back matches on successive days has been bringing mixed luck for Yorkshire; they won against Leicestershire on 1st July at Headingley defending a total of 168 for 5, a good foundation laid by Gale and Finch. The pair posted 41 for the opening stand in 5.3 overs with Gale playing consistently with the bat, opening the innings. Others down the line helped with useful contributions taking the total to a challenging 168 for 5. Sidebottom and Rashid bowled well in restricting the opponents to just 154, winning the match by 14 runs. On 2nd Jul they lost to a well prepared Durham at Leeds not able to chase a moderate target of 123, getting bowled out for just 95, though Rafiq and Rashid bowled well in restricting Durham to 123. Yorkshire won against Northants by 16 runs defending a good score of 181 at Northampton, displaying a good team effort that will be key to their success in the upcoming match too.
Yorkshire has been able to put up a good total batting first, and if they can repeat their recent performances, they are likely to win against Durham.
