About the Match
Lancashire leads the table with 12 points from 6 wins of 8 matches played whereas the Yorkshire team has played only 5 matches and have 7 points from 3 wins and a tie. The two teams have clashed earlier on 6th June with Yorkshire emerging victorious, reaching the target of 180 for a loss of just 5 wickets with 3 balls to spare. Lancashire would like to avenge the defeat to defend their enviable position in the league table. Both teams had faced the Northants in their recent matches, wherein on 20th, Lancashire won against them and Yorkshire had defeated the Northants on 13th June; in both cases, the winners setting defendable targets. It will be a tough contest as both teams will try to come out all guns blazing and dominate the other right from the start.
In their earlier encounter with Lancashire on 6th June, Yorkshire was made to bowl first and the bowlers could make a dent only in the 5th over; Rashid and Robinson claimed 1 wicket each with Bresnan and Pyrah taking 2 wickets each to restrict the opponent to 179 for 6. The Yorks chased it successfully after Gayle got dismissed early with just 3 runs on board; but Finch with 88 off 55 balls and Lees rescued the team to add 99 for the 2nd wicket, which paved the way for a well accomplished win by 5 wickets with 3 y balls to spare. Now in the reverse game, it needs to be seen if they can repeat the performance. In the win against Northants wherein the Yorks, after electing to bat, with a good batting display by Lees, Bairstow and Lyth, made 181 for 3, put up an imposing target which proved too much for Northants to reach, with superb bowling by Patterson, Pyrah, Rafiq, Rashid and Robinson. The team needs to perform again with determination and repeat their heroics to spoil the party for Lancashire.
Electing to bat first on winning the toss in their last encounter, Lancashire started well with a strong 55 off 28 balls by Smith who dominated the opening partnership of 58 with Davies. After the fall of 2 more wickets, by the 10th over, Horton rotated the strike with the batsmen to follow, making 60 off 45 balls, taking the total to 179 for 6 which seemed a defendable score. But the Yorks had a different script altogether, with Kabir Ali, Junaid Khan and Smith not able to stop the run-flow from the blade of Finch facilitating their win with 3 balls to spare. In the last game against Northants, they did marvelously by electing to bat on winning the toss and amassing 187 for 3 thanks to a lively batting performance by Smith, Prince, Brown and Buttler. Junaid Khan, Kabir Ali, Parry and Lilley dominated the opponents with the ball to dismiss them for 134. Lancashire needs to strategize on their approach in the upcoming match against Yorkshire, especially, with their bowling to contain the Yorks and win the game.
While it’s surely going to be an interesting match considering the stakes for both the teams, we expect Lancashire to come out as winners.
