About the Match
Australia scored a thumping victory over hosts England yesterday in the 1st T20I of the tour. With a 1-0 lead, the Aussies are charged up to make a clean sweep in the T20 series when they play England in the 2nd and final T20 match on Aug 31. Coming at the heels of a disappointing loss in the Ashes series, this sweet victory has brought back Team Australia’s foray into the tournament even stronger. England will now have to work out new strategies and try to level the series by winning the next match.
The absence of fast bowlers proved costly for the team in the opening T20 match against Australia. Put aside Dernbach’s remarkable 3 wickets, the deficit in quality bowling led to their downfall early on. Though Brad, Finn and Briggs took a wicket each, it wasn’t enough to stop the heroics of Aaron Finch which became the stumbling block for the hosts. Root and Briggs were smashed away in the final overs with ease, making the chase even more daunting for the English batsmen. The batting order collapse came as an absolute shock to the home crowd, with a glimmer of hope provided by Root who blasted 90 off 49 balls. However, his efforts went unsupported by his team mates and England faced defeat by a huge margin. England needs to once again find the magic formula that worked for them in the tests. With the crucial match ahead of them, the hosts have to perform much better against the Aussies.
A superb 39-run victory against England in the 1st T20 is Australia’s first win in any format of the game in almost 6 months. Aaron Finch’s spectacular 156 runs off 63 balls broke all records. It’s the highest individual score in international T20 and his 14 sixes is another world record. Finch and Marshall steadied the innings and added 114 in 9 overs for the 2nd wicket. Shane Watson also provided quite an impetus with his 37 runs. The Australians performed brilliantly to post the 2nd highest total of 248 runs in T20I. The incredible display of skills continued in the second half with Mitchell Johnson and Hazlewood claiming two wickets each, making early in-roads into the English batting line-up. Though Fawad Ahmed’s spin tactics didn’t work, Watson and Faulkner contributed with a wicket each. It was an amazing combination of skills, talent and confidence that put Australia back on top.
Australia has tasted success after a long dry spell of cricket and will not let go of their advantage easily. With team morale at its peak, the visitors are capable of a series win here. Meanwhile England will fight back to reclaim their superior stature. Will they succeed against the pumped up Aussies? Or will Australia take home the T20 trophy with their superb comeback? The result could go either way. However, Australia is looking more confident to win the 2nd and final match.
Australia, 1.80 @ Bet365
The highlight of the first match was the spectacular innings played by Aaron Finch. He scored 156-runs in no time and took the game away from the hosts. He might not repeat his performance in the second game, but he looks in promising form and it will surely be difficult to get him out. He is in supreme form since IPL and because he opens the batting, he has the time to get set and score freely thereafter. I won’t be surprised if he emerges best batsman for the visitors yet again.
