About the Match
After the 3-1 test series result in favor of the home team, visitors India are now up against a resurgent England team for a five match ODI series, the first of which is being played at Bristol on 25th August. Some of the players who were part of the test squad have been retained in both the teams and some youngsters with proven records in the shorter format in domestic circuits have been included and will get a chance to prove their worth at the international level. It is expected to be a grueling series with very little breathing space between matches and the crowd is going to get a feast of some serious battles on the field.
Cook has proved his mettle in handling the team with success in the test series and he will be expecting similar performances from his mates; he has the ever effervescent Anderson opening the attack with support from Gurney, Finn, Woakes and Jordan. Moeen Ali and Tredwell can help the team with their varieties. The brilliance and consistency of Gary Ballance in the test matches, is sure to be repeated; Buttler, Bell and Root will strengthen the middle order, bringing resilience to the English batting. It is a mix of players with international exposure and younger players who have played only in domestic tournaments, however England is in the re-building phase after their disastrous tour of Australia and the players will have to deliver to make their places for the forth coming rigorous schedule ahead of them.
They have reputation and proven records in ODIs to their credit but they have to perform in each and every occasion to ensure their retention in the national squad; Dhoni surely has a tough task even though he has a mix of old and young players, with some of them being new finds from the IPL tournament. Shikhar Dhawan gets a chance to come out of the bad patch and so dies Kohli; Jadeja will be handy as an all-rounder along with Ravichandran Ashwin, who did well in the test matches, against a rampant English squad. Mohit Sharma and Umesh Yadav also can play an all-round role, along with Stuart Binny who couldn’t deliver much in the opportunities given in the tests. Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Karn Sharma with Shami can be effective as they can share their experience in bowling in the English conditions Rahane continues to be in the squad and Rohit Sharma will be there to partner with him as the opening pair. Suresh Raina will be out to perform and the stubborn Rayudu and Sanju Samson have their chance to be in the squad but they need to deliver for the cause of the team to be in the national squad for the schedules to come later. England will surely be a very good learning ground for the youngsters.
Having lost the test series after a disappointing display of their game, India will now have to bounce back to bring some respectability to their reputation. Though England is riding a wave of enthusiasm after the emphatic victory and does have the home advantage, Dhoni and his men look hungry for a win and might finally find their redemption here.
