ENGW vs NZW Team Previews

England Women

England Women were favorites to win the series before the series started, but they certainly have not played like one. Even in their previous series, which was against India, England Women were far from their best and it seems like their poor run of form is just getting extended to yet another series.

Even though they are leading the series 2-1, both of their wins have been far from convincing. England Women have batted poorly with their middle-order being the primary reason for the underperformance. Considering that England Women featured in the Hundred prior to the series as well, fatigue could be a factor contributing to their underperformance.

The likes of Lauren Winfield, Tammy Beaumont, and Heather Knight have done well in the series so far, but there has absolutely been no support from the middle-order. With top-order failing in the middle-order being out of form in the last match, England Women just managed to put a total of 178, which was eventually chased down by the Kiwis.

With the bowling, however, England Women have been clinical and that was apparent in the last match as well. Although the bowlers had a total of just 178 runs to play with, they did well to put Kiwis in a spot of bother and make a match out of a terrible situation. Katherine Brunt, picking up four for 22 in her 10, was the pick of the English bowlers.

On paper, England Women have such a good batting side that is has been surprising to see them put low scores match after match. Between Tammy Beaumont, Heather Knight, Amy Jones, and Danni Wyatt, English Women have wealth of experience. Besides with the likes of Tash Farrant and Kate Cross available to bat at ten and eleven, England Women bat deep. England Women just need to get their act together and give themselves some time to score runs and if they manage to do that in the upcoming match, beating them is going to be incredibly difficult.

New Zealand Women

New Zealand Women would have been left disappointed in the first two given that they could not finish the game despite being in good positions on numerous occasions. Now that they have finally tasted success, they will be looking to utilize the form they are in and the momentum they have.

Just like England Women, New Zealand Women have been far from their best, but have done better than many expected from them. In fact, their bowlers have been so good that none even once in the series has the potent English batting lineup has looked in complete control. The return of Lea Tahuhu to the fold bolstered their lineup and that and he experience paid rich dividends as she picked up five wickets in the last match.

On the batting front, New Zealand Women have done well, but have lacked consistent performances. We saw Amy Satterthwaite play a massive knock in the first match, but she got no support from the other batsmen. In the last match as well, Maddy Green, who played a match-winning knock of 70, got little support from the rest of the batsmen. The presence of Suzie Bates and Sophie Devine does inspire confidence, but the Kiwis will want to fire in unison going forward.

All in all, New Zealand have a decent unit on paper and will be looking to convert that in performances. Their seniors have been far from what they are capable of so far, but if they are able to hit form, England Women will have their work cut out.

ENGW vs NZW Toss Prediction

Even though New Zealand Women won the last match chasing, they might not want to chase again given the conditions. Being a day game, there are zero chances of dew and the surface is likely to slow down with the progression of the game. Chasing here will be tricky and runs on the board will matter. We expect the captain winning the toss to bat first.

Pitch and Conditions

Owing to plenty of cricket being played over the last few months, these grounds in England have been used a lot and groundsmen have been kept busy. This is one reason that we are seeing sluggish surfaces in this series, which is quite unlike what we generally see in England. Derby generally features a sporting wicket with something for the bowlers as well as the batsmen. Having said that, we do expect the surface to get slower as the game progresses. Considering that, the team batting first should be fairly happy if they are able to put anything over 240 runs on the board.
