Women’s cricket has taken a backseat as cricket boards around the world struggle to get their finances in order after the COVID-19 pandemic hit. It is a sad fact of cricket life that women’s cricket does not make money and so it can be difficult to organize series when things are tough.
This is where the ECB has to be given credit for stepping in and ensuring that cricket goes on.
The English women are going to be hosting the West Indies women for a series of 5 T20 internationals, all of them to be held in Derby, over the next ten days. Players from both sides will be keen to get on the ground and finally get some cricket under their belts.
England women vs West Indies women 1st T20 is going to be played at the County Ground, Derby on the 21st of September 2020.
England goes into this contest as the firm favorite. Not only is the home side but it is also one of the premier sides of T20 cricket. In fact, with Australia and maybe India, England is at a whole different level as compared to the other teams.
The depth in this England team is fantastic. They have Heather Knight to lead the batting with support from Danielle Wyatt, Fran Wilson, Tammy Beaumont, and Lauren Winfeld. Even the bowlers are very good at batting.
Natali Sciver, Katherine Brunt, and Katie George are all bowling all-rounders but they are more than handy with the bat.
Most of these players play a central role for WBBL sides and so are used to playing at a high level of competition.
In terms of batting strength, England is far ahead of the West Indian bowlers.
Katherine Brunt and Any Shrubsole are going to be the lead bowlers for England in this series. Sophie Ecclestone and a number of other all-rounders can all contribute in the bowling as well. The flexibility and options at England’s disposal give them a big advantage.
Danielle Wyatt, Tammy Beaumont, Natalie Sciver, Heather Knight, Fran Wilson, Amy Ellen Jones, Katherine Brunt, Mady Villiers, Sarah Glenn, Sophie Ecclestone, Anya Shrubsole.
West Indies women’s cricket has stagnated or even gone backwards in recent times. It has some very good players but their development does not seem to have taken place at the same rate as their competitors.
This may be something for the coaching staff to look into or maybe even the board at a systemic level.
The West Indies women’s team has some dangerous players which also play around the world. We are talking about Stafanie Taylor, Hayley Matthews, and Deandra Dottin. These are three genuine all-rounders that can attack the bowling and be very effective with the ball in their hands as well.
The depth in the West Indian team is a big concern, though. If any one of these leading players does not hit form immediately, the lack of depth in the West Indies team gets exposed.
Shermaine Campbelle and Natasha McLean are two other dangerous batters that we think could have an impact.
The West Indian batting is decent when everyone is performing but its bowling needs a lot of work.
Hayley Matthews, Deandra Dottin, Stafanie Taylor, Shemaine Campbelle, Chinelle Henry, Britney Cooper, Lee Ann Kirby, Aaliyah Alleyne, Afy Fletcher, Shamilia Connell, Shakera Selman.
The team that wins the toss is going to want to bat first.

There is no rain expected for this match and we think there is going to be no weather-related interruption. The pitch at Derby is good for batting and the boundaries are going to be brought in as well. The ball tends to come on to the bat a bit slower and so the big hits may be more difficult than you expect with the smaller boundaries.
A score of around 150-160 should be par.
We are backing the home team to win this match and to do so convincingly. There are a lot of variables when teams start a series especially after such a long layoff but we think the class and depth of the English side will come through.
