The fans at County Cricket Ground, Chelmsford will be in for a treat in the next Vitality T20 Blast match to be played out at the venue, which is sold-out, between Essex Eagles and Somerset. The match will be played on the evening of Wednesday, 7th August. There's all to fight for in this match for both the sides as both the teams are neck-and-neck at the ladder with just Gloucestershire separating them and they both would love to get into the top-half of the points table. Essex are currently placed at the fifth spot with two wins to their name whereas Somerset are at the seventh spot with the same number of wins. The two teams have a difference of just one match, and this match could very prove to be a turning point for one of these two sides
Even though the Eagles had an extremely poor start to the competition, they find themselves in a decent position at the ladder, thanks to some exceptional individual performances in their last couple of matches. Cameron Delport has been in superb form for them, racking up just under a couple of hundred runs from five innings at a superb average of around 40. Also, he has got those runs at a strike-rate of close to 200 which speaks volumes about the kind of impact he's had on team's performance.
In the last few matches, Tom Westley has also joined the fold, and he is right behind Cameron Delport as far as Essex's batting charts in this season are concerned. He's scored 184 runs from the same number of matches as Delport.
Bowling-wise as well, the Eagles have stepped up only in their last couple of matches with Matt Quinn being their most successful bowler. He has picked up six wickets in the tournament so far with a best of 3 for 34.
The Eagles are coming into this match on the back of a massive win over Gloucestershire where both their batsmen and bowlers did well to strangle Gloucestershire. Batting first on a decent batting surface, Essex Eagles racked up a total of 206 runs on the board helped by half-centuries from Tom Westley and Cameron Delport. Westley scored 86 off 54 deliveries, and Delport contributed with 51 off 31. Just when they appeared to be losing way after a terrific start, in the middle-overs, DW Lawrence smashed Gloucs' bowlers to all parts of the ground and played a vital role in taking Essex's score to 206. He scored 56 in just 29 deliveries.
While a total of 206 always has some sort of cushion for the bowlers, their bowlers still needed to bowl well, and they did. Mohammad Amir was decent upfront and at the death and even though he could not pick up a wicket, he was tight nonetheless. The pick of their bowlers was, however, Adam Zampa who picked up a couple of wickets in the middle overs and rocked Gloucs' chase at crucial junctures.
All in all, Essex Eagles have always had a pretty strong team on paper, but they lacked consistency and application on the field. They applied themselves well against Gloucestershire and if they continue to play in the same manner against Somerset as well, beating them is going to be an extremely hard task.
Tom Westley, C Delport, Adam Wheater, RN ten Doeschate, Dan Lawrence, RS Bopara, Paul Walter, SR Harmer, Mohammad Amir, Aaron Beard, Adam Zampa.
Babar Azam has been in spledid touch for Somerset, but he's all they've had. Somerset are at the seventh spot in the points table with a couple of wins to their name amounting to four points. A win here will take them to six points, a point clear off the Eagles, which is what they'll aiming for in this upcoming fixture.
The addition of Babar Azam to their lineup has probably been the difference of them languishing at the bottom of the table and them being in a position from where they can qualify for the next round. Babar Azam is not only the top-scorer for Somerset, but he's also one of the top-scorers in the tournament, across both groups. He's scored 267 runs from six innings at an average of over 50. Tom Banton, his opening partner, is right behind him on the charts with 256 runs to his name in the tournament so far.
While Somerset have had extraordinary contributions from their two opening batsmen, the contribution from the rest of their batsmen has been negligible in comparison. The likes of Peter Trego and James Hildreth have looked good, but they both failed to take the team across the line whenever presented with an opportunity. Also, they've been found wanting with the ball on many occasions, and their over-reliance on Jerome Taylor is well and truly apparent.
Somerset are coming into this match on the back of an embarrassing loss wherein their bowlers were smashed to all parts of the ground by AB de Villiers and Dawid Malan, and then their middle-order failed them yet again by a terrific start from Tom Banton, James Hildreth, and Tom Abell. Overall, they have a decent team on paper, but they haven't been able to replicate their strength on the field. They'd need contributions from the rest of their bowlers as well as their middle-order for them to make a mark in the tournament going forward.
Babar Azam, Tom Banton, JC Hildreth, TB Abell, EJ Byrom, Tom Lammonby, RE Van Der Merwe, Craig Overton, TD Groenewald, Jerome Taylor, MTC Waller.
Check out the Dream11 Fantasy lineup for the Vitality T20 Blast match which is to be played between Essex Eagles and Somerset at Chelmsford
There is plenty of similarities between the two sides. Both the sides have a terrific opening combination in which both the openers of respective teams have scored heavily. They both are in a pretty much similar position at the points table, with the same number of wins, and are looking to make a move on in the tournament. While it's hard to separate the two sides, the Eagles are playing at home, coming off a much better outing in their previous match, and have a slightly better-balanced lineup as compared to Somerset. For those reasons, we think that the Eagles are more likely to edge past the visitors in this upcoming fixture.
