Blown away by AB de Villiers special on the opening day of Vitality T20 Blast - 2019. They'll have yet another opportunity to garner two crucial points on the evening of 19th July when they face Surrey at County Ground, Chelmsford. Surrey, who are yet to feature in the tournament, are a star-studded side featuring the likes of Imran Tahir, Aaron Finch, and Curran Brothers who all have done pretty well in their respective recent matches. The two teams are set to meet each other on the evening of 19th July. As we witnessed in the last edition, two points proved to be a huge difference as far as qualification for the playoffs is concerned and, therefore, both the sides will be itching to get two important points here.
Essex Eagles are one of the most well-known teams in English domestic circuit but haven't been as successful. In their most recent encounter, their first of this season, they were blown away by power-packed performances by AB de Villiers and Ryan ten Doeschate.
Batting first on a tricky batting surface, Eagles posted a decent total of 164 for six off their allotted 20 overs. However, magical innings by AB de Villiers coupled with some poor death bowling by their made their total appear dwarf by all standards. Middlesex Panthers eventually overhauled their total with three overs and seven wickets in hand.
They have a pretty decent batting unit, but lack of performances from their top order would certainly be concerning for their top-order. Failures of Delport and Chopra to score even in the double figures hurt their start, and they'd want their top order to do a lot better in the upcoming fixture. If they can manage to do that and post an improved bowling performance, it could be a hard match for Surrey.
Varun Chopra, C Delport, Tom Westley, RN ten Doeschate, Dan Lawrence, RS Bopara, Adam Wheater, SR Harmer, Shane Snater, Adam Zampa, Matthew Quinn.
Captained by veteran bowler Jade Dernbach, Surrey is one of the most star-studded sides of the tournament consisting of stalwarts in all departments of the game. They have an immaculately experienced side with the likes of Imran Tahir and Imran Tahir leading in bowling and batting respectively.
Despite the presence of so many stars in their lineup, it was surprising to see them not qualify for the playoffs in the last edition of the tournament. While there are chances of it happening again, it is an unlikely scenario. They have all their bases covered, at least on paper and will be a tough side to beat on Friday.
While the absence of English power-player Jason Roy will create a void at the top of their order, they still have enough firepower at the top. The all-rounders in Sam Curran and Tom Curran add to their depth and balance and will be key to their fortunes not just in the upcoming fixture, but also in the competition ahead.
Aaron Finch, Rory Burns, Will Jacks, Ben Foakes, Sam Curran, Rikki Clarke, Jordan Clark, Tom Curran, Jade Dernbach, Gareth Batty, Imran Tahir.
While the Eagles are a pretty strong side on paper and posted a decent total on a tricky surface, they found it challenging to contain AB de Villiers, as would most teams of the world would. Essex Eagles are still likely to miss the services of Mohammad Amir which renders their bowling lineup a little toothless. Surrey, on the other hand, look a better side on paper with all their bases covered. They have an excellent amalgamation of youth and experience with almost all their batsmen capable of hitting the long ball right from the word go. For those reasons, we think that Surrey are better placed to emerge on top in the upcoming fixture.
