About the Match
The Gladiators lost their opening match against Jaguars by 27 runs and will now look to put up a better performance when they meet City Kaitak at Mong Kok on 9th March. Kaitak also comes here at the back of a loss in the first match against Kowloon Cantons by 8 wickets and will be eager to redeem themselves here. Both sides will try to use the resources at hand to overcome the challenges on the field and whichever team can put up an all-round effort will be better placed to win the contest on Thursday.
Galaxy Gladiators Lantau
The batting line-up has experienced players like Jesse Ryder, Sangakkara and Ryan ten Doeschate but they couldn’t impress with the bat while chasing 146 runs against Jaguars in the opening match. Captain Anshuman Rath led from the front with a well-made 45 while others down the line like Kruger and Rafiq kept the scoreboard ticking; however, they couldn’t build steady partnerships and ultimately lost the match by 27 runs.
Earlier, the fast-bowlers had failed to put up a disciplined effort, with players like Doeschate and Haseeb Amjad proving to be very expensive. Spinners Azeem Rafiq and A Vala had taken 3 wickets between them to contain the opponents at 145 but the batting line-up crumbled under pressure and failed to reach the target.
They have a good mix of experience and young talent and could try to make a comeback here with the help of T20 experts like Doeschate and Sangakkara. The bowling attack has a good variety and could come out with all the firepower to stifle the opposition on Thursday.
Batting first against Cantons, the batsmen did a superb job of posting a challenging target of 200 thanks to a brilliant 87 off 57 by Kyle Coetzer and an unbeaten 75 by Chris Jordan. Players like Dilshan, Pooran and Emrit were duck-out but Coetzer and Jordan’s 125-run stand for the 5th wicket took them to a competitive total on board.
However, the spinners put up a horrific show, giving away easy runs to the opposition and couldn’t stop them from hitting the winning runs. Jordan and Emrit each took a wicket but others gave up without a fight, losing the match by 8 wickets and more than 5 overs remaining.
While the batting line-up has good depth with players like Coetzer, Dilshan, Nicholas Pooran, Chris Jordan and all-rounder Emrit, the bowling squad needs to pull up its socks and give a better show in the upcoming match.
Both teams lost their respective opening games of the season but will be determined to make a comeback here. While Kaitak has a solid batting line-up which performed brilliantly in the last game, Gladiators excellent with the ball in their game against Jaguars. The contest could go down to the wire but we feel that the Gladiators batsmen will come through here and with the backing of their in-form bowlers, they are better placed to win this round
