GAW vs SLK Match Prediction - Aug 23, 2020

Guyana Amazon Warriors had a forgetful start to the tournament, but that didn't impact their performance in their second match. They followed their loss against Trinbago Knight Riders with a terrific show against St Kitts and Nevis Patriots. They were one of the favorites, to begin with and have now positioned themselves in the top half of the table. The competition is getting intense with every passing match and maintaining the position isn't going to be easy for the Warriors.

They have their next encounter scheduled to be played against St Lucia Zouks, who will be riding high on confidence after a superb win over Barbados Tridents. The Zouks were being touted as the least favorite team to win the competition, but with a bullying win over the defending champions, they have well and truly announced their candidature. Guyana Amazon Warriors and St Lucia Zouks have both tasted success and will be looking to continue building on it. Considering that, we expect the two teams to come hard at each other in what promises to be a cracker of a contest. The match is scheduled to be played on Brian Lara Cricket Academy at Tarouba in Trinidad, on 23rd August.

Guyana Amazon Warriors

It was ironic to see Guyana Amazon Warriors, the team that was unbeaten in the league stage last year, start their campaign with a rather dismal performance. They, however, shrugged off their poor performance and bounced back with an imposing win over the Patriots in their second match of the tournament. With that win, they moved to the second spot on the ladder with only Trinbago Knight Riders right above them.

Fielding first against the Patriots, Guyana Amazon Warriors plugged all the gaps that they exhibited in their opening game against Trinbago Knight Riders. Imran Tahir, who was whacked in the first match, was brilliant in the powerplay and got rid of dangerous Chris Lynn. Warriors strangled their hold thereafter with brilliance in the field as Nicholas Pooran's acrobatic effort caught Lewis out of his crease. While the going was already getting tough for the Patriots, Keemo Paul found his rhythm and picked up four quick wickets to set Patriots back. Eventually, the Warriors were left to chase down a total of 128 runs, which was never going to be difficult.

While the difference between the team would be written as three wickets in the book, the number of overs remaining would a more accurate indicator of the one-sided match. Shimron Hetmyer always looked in control during the chase and was dismissed only while finishing the game with glory. Chanderpaul Hemraj and Brandon King played good second-fiddles to Hetmyer as Warriors chased the total down with three overs to spare.

Although these are early days in the tournament, the Warriors seem to be riding high on Shimron Hetmyer's form. Hetmyer is already leading the batting charts in the tournament and will be a dangerous man to deal with for the Zouks. Although Ross Taylor couldn't contribute much against the Patriots as he was the victim of confusion between the wickets, he continues to be the backbone of the Warriors' innings. He played a crucial knock against the Knight Riders and seems to be playing to good effect the role that Shoaib Malik played last year for Guyana Amazon Warriors.

With Chris Green coming into bat at number eight, the Warriors have a batting lineup that goes deep. They have an excellent amalgamation of exuberance and experience. The presence of Nicholas Pooran, Sherfaine Rutherford, and Keemo Paul in their late middle-order ensures that they do not run out of gas late in the innings. Guyana Amazon Warriors, overall, are an immaculately balanced side, and getting past them will be a steep challenge for even the best sides in the competition.

St Lucia Kings

St Lucia Zouks may have been called as the fillers in the tournament, but they certainly didn't play like one in their last encounter. Under the brilliant leadership of Daren Sammy, they looked disciplined with the ball and were rewarded with a much-needed win over Barbados Tridents.

While one could argue that St Lucia Zouks absolutely smashed the Tridents in their previous match as the scoreboard suggests as well, it was certainly not the case. The Tridents had four frontline spinners to bowl had the contest lasted for full twenty overs, but the Zouks faced only one of them - Rashid Khan. Although Zouks did manage to score well off him, Rashid Khan managed to dismiss two Zouks' batsmen and that could have been a turning point had the game been longer.

Partially apparent from their match against the Tridents, the Zouks have a batting lineup that has a bit too much flair and might struggle to pace the innings on a difficult surface. Almost all of the Zouks batsmen are of hit-or-miss nature and when the surface is two-paced, the misses will eventually trump the hits.

Zouks' bowling, however, did an exceptional job as Tridents failed to get going despite having a terrific start. While the Zouks' new-ball bowling looks ordinary at best, they have a pretty good set of middle-over bowlers. With experienced bowlers like Mohammad Nabi, Roston Chase, and Kesrick Williams, St Lucia Zouks are capable of strangling even the best of batsmen on a surface that assists slower bowlers and that happened to be the case against the Tridents as well.

While the Zouks have some exceptional match-winning batsmen at their disposal, those batsmen are yet to show their utility on a two-paced surface. Zouks' batting line-up collapsed in a bid to score too quickly in the first match, against the Tallawahs, and that could so often be the case again. Zouks, therefore, appears to be a little too over-reliant on their bowling and keeping the other team to a modest total. If their bowlers are able to do that in the matches to follow, St Lucia Zouks would prove to be a threat to reckon with.

GAW vs SLK Toss Prediction

Disregarding the net run-rate, the two teams are placed neck and neck on the points table. Guyana Amazon Warriors looked good in the last match and have one of the best batsmen of the tournament. They have a batting lineup that can adapt and shift gears quickly. St Lucia Zouks, on the other hand, appears to be a bit vulnerable with the bat in testing conditions. Considering the recent results as well as the on-paper combination of the two sides, placing your money on a Guyana Amazon Warriors' win should be the way to go in this all-important fixture.

Pitch and Conditions

With the first innings getting lower and lower with every passing match, it is clear that the surface is getting difficult to bat on. We have had rain affect the surface as well as the outfield and that has added to the two-paced nature of the surface. Sun is expected to play hide and seek with scattered thunderstorms predicted for the day. Having said that, it is pretty likely that we will get a game in. Considering the surface and overhead conditions to be bowling friendly, we do not expect towering totals to be scored. A score of around 150 should be par here and the team batting first should feel pretty comfortable with anything over 165.

    Shimron Hetmyer, 7.5

There are only a few batsmen that have been as consistent as Shimron Hetmyer in the tournament so far. Shimron Hetmyer is currently at the top of the batting charts and has looked flawless in the two innings he has played. Going by his form and ability, stopping him is going to be difficult for the Zouks. Besides, there haven't been too many other batsmen that have been as consistent in any of the two sides in question. Betting on him as the best batsman of the day seems to be a pretty low-risk high reward affair.

    St Lucia Zouks at 1.91

St Lucia Zouks' strategy was clear in their match against the Patriots - to go after the bowlers in the powerplay and get as many runs as possible when the ball is hard. Their strategy paid off as the powerplay total proved to be the difference between the two sides. The likes of Andre Fletcher, Rakheem Cornwall, and Mark Deval are all naturally aggressive and that will add to the chances of Zouks going big in the powerplay. This is a reasonably good bet with excellent returns available.

Shimron Hetmyer Top Runscorer And Imran Tahir Top Wicket Taker at 11

Shimron Hetmyer has arguably been the best batsman of the tournament so far and has looked at east against even the best bowlers. Imran Tahir, on the other hand, had a poor outing in the first match and looked at his lethal best in the second. Tahir is a wicket-taking bowler and it is of high probability for Tahir to be the top wicket-taker for the Warriors. With both players doing well, you have good chances to hit a jackpot with this a bit risky bat.
