We are down to the last day of the Vincy T10 Premier League, and things couldn't have been more interesting. Arguably the best side of the tournament, Salt Pond Breakers, suffered a surprise defeat at the hands of La Soufriere Hikers and that has beautifully opened up the points table. Not only are Salt Pond Breakers and La Soufriere Hikers in the race to the top of the table, but Botanic Garden Rangers are also there is well. The Rangers, however, would need quite a few things to go their way.
The Rangers will need to win all their remaining fixtures and hope that the Breakers and the Hikers do not win any of theirs. The Rangers have their next match scheduled to be played against Grenadines Divers, who happen to be one of the three worst sides of the tournament. The match between the two sides is to be played Arnos Vale Sporting Complex, St. Vincent and Grenadines, on 29th May.
Grenadines Divers registered their second win of the tournament and moved past Dark View Explorers on the points table. On points, both the sides are tied at the ladder with Grenadines Divers ahead on net run-rate. Their campaign so far has been unconvincing with both their wins coming against For Charlotte Strikers, which is the only team in the tournament without a win to its name.
While Grenadines Divers have shown glimpses of brilliance, the glimpses have been far and few. Consistency has been an issue for their batsmen, who have struggled to score rapidly. However, it wasn't the case on Friday as they smashed 103 runs batting first. While their batting did well, a major portion of their total was scored through extras. Asif Hooper contributed with 29, Alex Samuel with 25, and extras added 22 runs to their total.
Their total of 103 was already an above-par score and chasing it down wasn't going to be easy. The Divers' bowlers maintained discipline and bowled in tight channels to keep Fort Charlotte Strikers at bay. Richie Richards was their top bowler of the day as he retured with impressive numbers of 2-0-11-2. Obed McCoy did a spectacular job as well as he gave away only five runs in his two overs and picked up a wicket in process.
All in all, the Divers have a decent side, at least on paper. Alex Samuel's and Asif Hooper's promotion seems to be working for them, as far as their batting order is concerned. They have the likes of Obed McCoy and Asif Hooper to provide them with four tight overs. They have the resources available at their disposal and it is only going to be a matter of execution on field. If they can do that, the Rangers would have their work cut out.
Wayne Harper, Alex Samuel, Romano Pierre, Shem Browne, Richie Richards, Razine Browne, Asif Hooper, Shamick Roberts, Geron Wyllie, Braxie Browne, Obed McCoy.
Botanic Garden Rangers continued to build on their superb form as they rushed past Dark View Explorers in their previous match. With a win in that match, the Rangers moved to the third spot on the points table and another couple of wins will push them to the top, provided the results of other matches go their way. While their net run-rate is still massively in red, they have the momentum and confidence, both of which could come in handy in the upcoming match.
Bowling first and Dark View Explorers, the Rangers' bowlers did exceedingly well. The Rangers failed to make a huge impact in the initial overs, but nicely pulled things back at the death. After being in a position to dictate terms, Dark View Explorers slipped from 57 for 2 to 80 for 6. Kesrick Williams and Kimali Williams were the picks of their bowlers as they picked up two wickets each at the expense of 13 and 14 runs respectively.
Botanic Garden Rangers needed to score 81 runs to win the match and they did it with extraordinary ease. Hyron Shallow and Oziko Williams got them off to a terrific start as they added 59 runs for the first wicket. They were left to score 22 runs off last 24 deliveries when Shallow was dismissed. Romel Currency and Atticus Browne finished the job with their short yet effective cameos. With a personal score of 35, Shallow was Rangers' best batsmen.
Botanic Garden Rangers have continued to improve with every passing game. The moves to promote Romel Currency and to open the bowling with Kesrick Williams seems to be paying off rich dividends. Hyron Shallow has been the best batsmen for them and a lot will rest on his shoulders for Rangers to do well in their remaining fixtures. They have a solid top-order followed by talented players in the middle. With their bowling doing well, beating them isn't going to be easy for Grenadine Divers, who have looked out of sorts so far.
Oziko Williams, Hyron Shallow, Joey Welcome, Atticus Browne, KOK Williams, Kenneth Dember, Kevin Abraham, Romario Bibby, Nigel Small, Ray Charles, Kimali Williams.
While chasing is a more preferred way of going about the business in the shorter formats of the game, teams have preferred to bat first in the last couple of days. It is largely because of the slowness of the surface and batsmen finding it difficult to time the ball under scoreboard pressure. We think that the trend will continue and the captain winning the toss will elect to bat first.

The tournament started off with a majority of scores reading in 70s. Recently, the average scores have moved to around 90 and that can also be considered a par score. Batting has been getting easier, but that has more to do with batsmen getting more adapt to the conditions. Yet again, the surface is expected to be sluggish, and handling spin is going to be a difficult job. It is not going to be easy to hit the ball from the outset and batsmen would want to get set before starting to launch. There is no rain predicted for the day and we expect a full match. Considering the surface and the overhead conditions, the team batting first will be looking to post a total of 90 runs on the board.

Although Vincy Premier League has been a short tournament, there has been no dearth of excitement. All the teams have fought hard and showcased brilliant skills. While the Strikers will be disappointed to not to post a win in the tournament yet, they will be looking forward to win their last match to grab a consolation win. For Rangers, their last match could be a matter of moving to the top of the table should other permutations and combinations happen to work out. They have been a better team as compared to Grenadines Divers, on paper as well as performance, and beating them isn't going to be easy. Placing money on a Rangers' win should be the way to go in this upcoming fixture.
