After a long tussle that lasted for around a month, we now have our finalists in Lanka Premier League 2020. Much to the surprise of most people, Galle Gladiators managed to march into the finale with a terrific show in their last few matches. The other finalists are Jaffna Stallions, who are coming off a massive win over Dambulla Viikings in the second semifinal of the tournament.
The title-decider is to be played between Galle Gladiators and Jaffna Stallions at Mahinda Rajapaksa International Stadium, Hambantota, on 16th December 2020. When the two teams met earlier in the tournament, Jaffna Stallions emerged on top with considerable ease - twice. However, the Gladiators were then struggling to find their best playing, but are now on top of their game. With two in-form teams taking on each other, Lanka Premier League is all set for a fitting finish.
Given the form, Gladiators had at the beginning of the tournament and the form that they have been in their recent two matches, Gladiators' fans would be hoping that it is just the beginning of their surge. They defeated perhaps the best team of the tournament in Colombo Kings in the semi-final and could present a tough challenge for the Stallions.
Galle Gladiators do not have a star-studded batting line-up, but they surely have a bowling attack that can keep even the best of the batsmen tied. They made life difficult for the Kings as they bowled with a plan and executed that plan to perfection. Keeping Colombo Kings down to a total of 150 was always going to be a challenge and they did so in a fantastic manner. Barring Shehan Jayasuriya, who gave away 16 runs in his only over and picked up a wicket, all the bowlers they used looked effective.
It is the Gladiators' batting that has been Achilles' Heel for them. It looked like they were going down the drain yet again as their main-man Danushka Gunathilaka failed to fire. While they eventually managed to chase down the total with two wickets to spare, they never looked in control. Danushka Gunathilaka has been in fantastic form and a lot will depend on him in the upcoming contest.
All in all, the Gladiators have played fabulous cricket in their last couple of matches but would need to step but their game even further. Their batsmen would need to fire collectively and if they can do that, they certainly have the bowlers to keep their opponents in check. After beating Tuskers and Kings, the Gladiators will be brimming with confidence and should not be taken lightly.
Danushka Gunathilaka, Ahsan Ali, Bhanuka Rajapaksa, Azam Khan, Sahan Arachchige, Shehan Jayasuriya, Hazratullah Zazai, Dhananjaya Lakshan, Mohammad Amir, Lakshan Sandakan, Nuwan Thushara.
Jaffna Stallions had a terrific first half in the tournament and were reigning the points table for the most part of the league stage before suffering a few embarrassing losses towards the end. They eventually ended at the third position on the points table, behind Colombo Kings and Dambulla Viikings, both of which are already knocked out of contention.
The proceedings of the semi-final pretty much emulated the campaign of the Stallions in the tournament. Batting first, the Stallions rode high on Johnson Charles' knock and got off to a flying start. Avishka Fernando played a brilliant role as a partner before he perished after scoring 39 off 26 deliveries. Once he was dismissed, the Stallions struggled to find momentum and just managed to crawl to a total of 165.
The total of 165, however, proved to be too much to chase down for the Viikings. It was largely because of the agility that the Viiking's fielders showed and helped bowlers by cutting off quick singles. Stallions also picked up a couple of wickets in the process. Wanindu Hasaranga once again proved to be their key man as he picked up 3 wickets for 15 runs in his spell and single-handedly sealed the deal for the Viiking.
On paper, the Stallions have a decent side and that has reflected in their performances. With Johnson Charles amongst the runs as well, Jaffna Stallions are looking like a complete unit. They have the team on-paper and the momentum and will be difficult to defeat in the grand finale.
Avishka Fernando, Johnson Charles, Charith Asalanka, Thisara Perera, Shoaib Malik, Chaturanga de Silva, Wanidu Hasaranga, Dhananjaya de Silva, Suranga Lakmal, Usman Khan, Duanne Olivier.

It is the biggest team of the tournament for both sides and the pressure will be intense. The experience could play a key role in the upcoming match and Jaffna Stallions have that in plenty. Also, Galle Gladiators are struggling as far as their batting is concerned and that could be a distinguishing factor between the two sides in the upcoming contest. On paper, the Stallions look a better-balanced team and are, therefore, our pick to emerge on top on Wednesday and lift the coveted trophy.
