So, a terrific win over Colombo Kings was a fluke from the Gladiators. At least that is what it seems like going by the performance they put up against Dambulla Viikings. With Kandy Tuskers registering a win in their match, the matter to qualify into the playoffs is no longer in the hands of the Gladiators. Having said that, the upcoming match is of massive importance for them as a loss here will push them out of contention.
There next match, coincidentally, against Kandy Tuskers, and the winner of this match will walk into the playoffs and the losing team will walk out of the tournament. Kandy Tuskers are coming off a massive win over Jaffna Stallions, who were table toppers before ending up on the receiving end of the stick. The match between the Tuskers and the Gladiators is to be played at Mahinda Rajapaksa International Stadium, Hambantota, on 10th December 2020.
It was a similar story for the Gladiators as in their previous outings as they were once again outplayed by their opponents. They found themselves in good positions more often than not but relinquished control and eventually lost the match. As the equation stands, they now need to win this upcoming match to qualify for playoffs, thanks to their net run-rate, which is better than the Tuskers'.
Batting first, it was all about Danusha Gunathilaka as none of their other batsmen managed to assist him at the top. Rajapaksa played a quick knock of 31, but given the form, Gladiators have been in, he needed to spend more time at the crease. Had it not been for the innings from Jayasuriya and Lakshan, the Gladiators would have managed a lot less total. They eventually finished with 168 runs on the board with Gunathilaka top-scoring for them.
While the total was just about par, Gladiators' bowlers did a terrific job of pushing Viikings on the back-foot. However, they lost control at the back end of the innings as their bowlers could not contain Samiullah Shinwari, who single-handedly took Viikings from a hopeless position to a magnificent victory. He was ably assisted by Gladiators' fielders who kept losing the ball on crucial occasions.
Galle Gladiators have lacked the ability to close games out from crunch situations. They dropped catches against the Viikings on a day that looked to be going pretty well for them. It is a high-pressure game and pressure is something that the Gladiators have not handled well. It will be interesting to see how Gladiators fare here.
Danushka Gunathilaka, Ahsan Ali, Bhanuka Rajapaksa, Azam Khan, Hazratullah Zazai, Shehan Jayasuriya, Sahan Arachchige, Dhananjaya Lakshan, Lakshan Sandakan, Mohammad Amir, Nuwan Thushara.
Kandy Tuskers just managed to stay alive in the tournament with a massive win over Jaffna Stallions. The win took them to the fourth spot on the ladder, but thanks to their inferior net run-rate, they'll have to register a win in their only remaining encounter.
Bowling first, the Tuskers were excellent on a decent batting wicket as they kept Stallions' high-profile batting lineup to a total of 150. The leader of their bowling attack happened to be Dale Steyn, who picked up wickets just at the right time. He was ably assisted by Gunaratne, who picked up two important wickets in an over to set Stallions back.
The chase shouldn't have been difficult for the Tuskers, but their batsmen made it look like it. They lost too many wickets in the first ten overs and it needed an unbeaten partnership between Asela Gunaratne and Irfan Pathan to seal the deal. Pathan scored 25 and Gunaratne ended up with 46.
All in all, the Tuskers did well to register a win here, but they seemed to be losing the plot despite in a good position. Given that this upcoming match is a do-or-die fixture, the Tuskers could have a difficult time handling the pressure.
Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Kusal Perera, Kusal Mendis, BRM Taylor, Asela Gunaratne, Irfan Pathan, Dilruwan Perera, S Prasanna, Nuwan Pradeep, MVT Fernando, DW Steyn.
Check out the Dream11 fantasy team lineup for the LPL match to be played between Kandy Tuskers and Galle Gladiators.
This is a virtual quarter-final and both sides are already wary of that. Nothing less than a win will work for the Gladiators, but a wash-out will push Tuskers into the semis. Both sides have a key-man dependency and that could be a factor in the upcoming match. Having said that, the Gladiators have a better team on paper, have come close on multiple occasions, and have Gunathilaka in terrific form. Therefore, they are our pick to win this all-important encounter.
