About the Match
TNPL 2017 has been fascinating in a lot of respects but chiefly because a lot of evenly matches teams compete in it and we believe this is the case in the match between the Chepauk Super Gillies and Ruby Trichy Warriors.
The position of the two teams in the table may point otherwise but the margins of losing and winning have been very fine. The stakes are high for both teams in this match. The Super Gillies want to end up in the top-2 while the Ruby Tricky Warriors have to win all their remaining matches to have any chance of qualifying for the finals.
Chepauk Super Gillies
The Super Gillies have firmly established themselves as the number 2 team in this league with four wins out of five matches. Their only loss came to the TUTI Patriots, a team that has swept aside everyone in its way.
The reasons behind their success are many but they start with the form of Gopinath at the opening slot. Like almost every other team, the highest scorer has been an opening batsman but Gopinath has actually gone a couple of steps further by batting through the innings as well.
He has two no outs in the tournament and a total of 160 runs to make him the most valuable Super Gillie wicket.
It’s not just about him as well because Thalaivan Sargunam and S Karthik also have over 100 runs to their name in the tournament.
Add to this the big hitting abilities of Antony Dhas and Sasidev and you have a pretty decent batting lineup.
The Gillies are also fortunate to have the services of Sai Kishore, the bowler of the tournament so far in our opinion. He has 10 wickets to his name at an economy rate of 5.65 and is consistently threatening the batsmen irrespective of when he comes on to bowl.
R Sathish and R Alexander form a strong support system giving the Gillies a nicely rounded out side.
Ruby Trichy Warriors
Can a team that has won just one out of its four matches turn things around and win the next three? It may seem difficult but is definitely possible.
For that to happen however we believe that the Ruby Trichy Warriors will have to find players other than their opening batsmen to share the load. Baba Inderjith and Bharath Shankar have 151 and 128 runs in the competition respectively.
The next best is Nilesh Subramaniam with 80 and no one else has scored more than 50 runs as well.
Being top heavy is a problem that some other teams in the TNPL also have but it’s particularly severe in the case of Ruby Trichy Warriors. We believe that individual brilliance from Baba Aparajith is necessary for the Warriors to register regular victories, something that can be quite dicey to depend on.
The bowling is a bit more balanced with K Vignesh providing excellent control and Kaushik picking up regular wickets. Regular contributions from J Kousik are also vital to the Trichy Warriors.
It will take a huge effort the Warriors to turn their season around and it will be wonderful to watch if they manage it but we have our doubts.
Pitch and Conditions
The pitch at Dindigul has played much better than last year but signs of wear and tear have started to emerge. We expect a slower than usual pitch with help for the spinners. A score of 160 should be considered par.
Rain has been forecast for the match and that could mean we are in for multiple delays and maybe even a washout.
