About the Match
Gujarat Lions and Delhi Daredevils occupy the sixth and seventh positions respectively in the IPL points table. These two teams will now take on each other in the 50th match of the league at Kanpur on 10th May. For both Gujarat and Delhi, a playoff berth is essentially out of reach, and both would be playing only for pride.
Gujarat Lions have had a really poor season this year. They defeated Punjab in their last game, but it came as something too little too late, and as a result, Gujarat find themselves languishing at the sixth position in the IPL points table.
Gujarat had started their campaign with two losses against Kolkata Knight Riders and Sunrisers Hyderabad. But in their next match against Rising Pune Supergiant, Andrew Tye took a five-wicket haul and gave Lions their first win of the season. This win could have led to a shift in momentum for them, but it was not to be, as Gujarat went on to lose their next two games against Mumbai and Bangalore.
Things were looking real bad for Gujarat; but against Kolkata, their captain Suresh Raina displayed great all round skills and won the match for his team. But any hopes of sustaining this momentum were dashed by Punjab in their next encounter, where Gujarat never really looked like chasing down Punjab’s total of 188 and were beaten quite comprehensively.
Then they were able to get a win against their fellow strugglers, Bangalore, but went on to lose their next three games against Mumbai, Pune, and Delhi. In their last game though, when all hopes of making the playoffs had been lost, Gujarat showed what they are capable of with a dominating win against Punjab.
Gujarat only has four wins from twelve games thus far and have suffered due to some obvious chinks in their armor. They have not been able to fix these chinks, and as a result are out of the contention for a top four finish.
Delhi Daredevils have got four wins out of the eleven games they have played so far. All four of their wins have been pretty convincing affairs, but most of their losses have been in tight games, where the results could have easily been different had some small moments fallen in place for them.
Delhi started off their campaign with a closely fought defeat against Bangalore, but in their next two games, against Pune and Punjab, Delhi got convincing wins with a great century from Sanju Samson against Pune and a fantastic all-round display from Corey Anderson against Punjab.
Delhi could not maintain the momentum of these two wins though and went on to lose their next five games against Kolkata, Hyderabad, Mumbai, Kolkata and Punjab. But in their next two games, against Hyderabad and Gujarat, Delhi were able to get two superb wins on the back of some stunning batting from their young batsmen.
It was looking like Delhi would be able to conjure a streak here and make a play for a top-four finish, but their hopes were crushed by a rampaging Mumbai, and now Delhi find themselves all but out of contention.
The Delhi bowling attack has remained reasonably dependable and potent throughout the season, with Zaheer Khan, Cummins, Shahbaz Nadeem, Amit Mishra, Chris Morris and Corey Anderson all performing their roles efficiently in different games. It has been their batting which has remained highly inconsistent and this has cost them dearly.
Gujarat and Delhi are facing each other for the second time this season. Delhi had scored a dominant win in the first encounter. This will be the first match being held in Kanpur, and in theory, offers the home advantage to the Lions. Both these teams have had middling seasons, but Gujarat are coming off a morale-boosting win in their last match and this gives them a slight upper hand in this contest.
