About the Match
The Gujarat Lions are seeing a resurgence in their IPL campaign and have now won their last two matches convincingly. Mumbai is still very comfortably poised with 6 wins out of 8 matches but would not want to slow down and let the momentum slip.
The Lions started this tournament very unsure of what their best team was and struggled to find a balance between packing enough batting talent and shoring up their weak bowling lineup. Their last match against RCB was the first one where it felt like they finally got their combination right. We think that the Lions must play both Tye and Faulkner in every game otherwise it leaves their bowling just a little too weak.
Tye once again broke the back of the opposition bowling lineup and ended up with 3 wickets in the game. He is by and far the best bowler in this Gujarat Lions lineup. The others though like Basil Thampi, Ravindra Jadeja, Shivil Kaushik or the others tried have not had much impact in the games so far.
Luckily for the Lions though, they have some of the most explosive T20 batsmen in their lineup. Aaron Finch showed why he is one of the most dangerous batsmen in this form of the game as he smashed 72 off 34 deliveries, while Suresh Raina is once again among the leading run scorers in this tournament.
Brendon McCullum too has 16 sixes to his name in the tournament already and is in brilliant form. They will all need to be at their best against a strong Mumbai bowling lineup that has plenty of variety and experience at the death.
Rohit Sharma was fined for arguing a line decision against the umpire in Mumbai’s last match against Pune which they eventually lost. That was an indication of the passion he brings to the IPL and the manner in which Mumbai approaches every match.
There are not too many weaknesses in this Mumbai side as the batsmen led by Nitish Rana and the bowlers led by Mitchell McClenaghan both form an imposing unit. Nitish Rana has scored 266 runs in this tournament at a strike rate of 135 and with 16 sixes along the way.
In fact, alongside Rana, Jos Buttler (14), Kieron Pollard (11), and Hardik Pandya (10) all have double-digit sixes in the tournament already.
That is awesome power at Mumbai’s disposal without their best batsman from previous years, Rohit Sharma, really hitting top form.
The real strength for Mumbai has been their bowling in our opinion as Harbhajan Singh, Jasprit Bumrah, Mitchell McClenaghan and the Pandya Brothers have consistently performed under pressure. Malinga and Johnson have been alternated by the team management to great success as well.
Harbhajan Singh is giving runs at an incredible 5.88 runs per over, Krunal Pandya 7.00, Bumrah 8.00, Hardik Pandya 8.20 and McClenaghan at 8.71 to make sure that the opposition batsmen have no chance.
Head To Head
The Gujarat Lions are only 1 year old in this competition and managed to beat the Mumbai Indians both times they played last year. This year, the Mumbai Indian managed to win their first game against the Lions and are favorites to do so again.
We think that Mumbai Indians should be able to continue their winning momentum in this tournament and overcome the Gujarat Lions.
Mumbai Indians to win.
