About the Match
Gujarat Lions and Rising Pune Supergiants have suffered consecutive losses and are placed in the bottom of the table in the ongoing Indian Premier League; the two teams will take on each other in the 13th Match of the series at Rajkot on 14th April. While the Lions lost to Sunrisers and Knight Riders, the Supergiants lost two games against Daredevils and Kings XI after registering a victory in their opening game against Mumbai Indians. Both teams will be eager to set things right before it gets too late; it needs to be seen which of them can keep a cool head above their shoulders to emerge victorious on Friday.
The team has match-winners like Brendon McCullum, Suresh Raina, and Aaron Finch, who could hit big with the bat and build a solid foundation. Jason Roy, Dwayne Smith, and Karthik tried their best to get the scoreboard ticking in the game against Sunrisers but they could muster only 135 in the end. The bowling effort was disappointing and with only medium-pacer Praveen Kumar being able to dismiss an opponent, they lost the match by 9 wickets.
In the opening match against Kolkata Knight Riders too, the bowlers put up a horrendous show, being unable to defend a strong total of 183. Raina led from the front as he posted 68 off 51 while Karthik and McCullum helped stabilize the innings with 47 and 35 runs respectively. However, their efforts went in vain as bowlers like Kulkarni, Gony, Kaushik and Smith proved to be too expensive, leaking away runs and helping the opponents register a smashing win by 10 wickets.
They have talented bowlers like Dhawal Kulkarni, Manpreet Gony, and Praveen Kumar, who can use their fast-bowling skills to provide regular breakthroughs; Shivil Kaushik and Jakati bring their spin skills to the table and could try to outwit the opponents on Friday.
Likely Starting XI: Jason Roy - Brendon McCullum
- Suresh Raina (c) - Dwayne Smith
- Dinesh Karthik (wk) - James Faulkner
- Nathu Singh - Praveen Kumar - Ravindra Jadeja - Dhawal Kulkarni - Shivil Kaushik.
Rising Pune Supergiants
They registered an emphatic win against Mumbai Indians, chasing down 185 runs with ease thanks to a superb batting effort by captain Steve Smith, who scored 84 off 54, and opener Ajinkya Rahane’s well-made 60. The bowling department that consists of experts like Imran Tahir, Ben Stokes, and Adam Zampa also did very well to take regular wickets and restrict Mumbai to 184. However, they couldn’t translate the opening success to wins in the matches thereafter.
Against Daredevils recently, the batting line-up collapsed like a pack of cards, getting all-out for 108 runs while chasing a gigantic target of 206. Faf du Plessis, Stokes, MS Dhoni and openers Rahane and Mayank Agarwal failed to make an impression and they couldn’t build steady partnerships. Earlier, spinners Tahir and Zampa and medium-pacer Chahar took a wicket each but the others gave away too many runs.
In the match against Kings XI, they posted a target of 164 for the opposition thanks to a well-made 50 by Stokes and Tiwary setting up an unbeaten 40; Smith and Rahane contributed well but the humble total of 163 wasn’t enough for the bowlers to defend despite a good show by Tahir. They have the resources to bounce back in the upcoming match.
Likely Starting XI:
Ajinkya Rahane - Mayank Agarwal - Steve Smith (c) - MS Dhoni (wk) - Ben Stokes - Manoj Tiwary - Dan Christian - Imran Tahir - Rajat Bhatia - Ashok Dinda - Rahul Chahar
The Lions and the Supergiants are facing each other for the first time this season and we could very well see some fireworks across the park; both teams have batting experts who can do well, however, Gujarat has a strong batting lineup coupled with great fielders. Bowling will be bolstered by the return of Jadeja and therefore Lions are our pick for tomorrow.
