About the Match
Sunrisers Hyderabad and Gujarat Lions occupy the fourth and seventh positions respectively in the IPL points table. These two teams will now take on each other in the 53rd match of the league at Kanpur on 13th May. For Gujarat, a playoff berth is already out of reach, and they would be playing only for pride. For Hyderabad though, a victory here is absolutely crucial, as a loss can put their playoff chances in jeopardy.
Gujarat Lions have had a really poor season this year. They were defeated by Delhi in their last game and now find themselves languishing at the seventh position in the IPL points table.
Gujarat had started their campaign with two losses against Kolkata Knight Riders and Sunrisers Hyderabad. But in their next match against Rising Pune Supergiant, Andrew Tye took a five-wicket haul and gave Lions their first win of the season. This win could have led to a shift in momentum for them, but it was not to be, as Gujarat went on to lose their next two games against Mumbai and Bangalore.
Things were looking real bad for Gujarat; but against Kolkata, their captain Suresh Raina displayed great all round skills and won the match for his team. But any hopes of sustaining this momentum were dashed by Punjab in their next encounter, where Gujarat never really looked like chasing down Punjab’s total of 188 and were beaten quite comprehensively.
Then they were able to get a win against fellow strugglers, Bangalore, but went on to lose their next three games against Mumbai, Pune, and Delhi. In their next game though, Gujarat showed a glimpse of what could have been, with a dominating win against Punjab. But on Wednesday, Gujarat lost to Delhi, as they could not find a way to stop a brilliant Shreyas Iyer.
Gujarat only has four wins from thirteen games thus far and have suffered due to some very obvious chinks in their armor. They have not been able to fix these chinks, and as a result are out of contention for a top four finish.
Sunrisers started their campaign in stunning fashion with wins at home against Royal Challengers Bangalore and Gujarat Lions. The top order clicked, middle order responded admirably when required and the bowling performed well as a unit.
But after the first two matches, as they moved away from home, things changed dramatically. They lost their next two matches against Mumbai and Kolkata, despite Bhuvneshwar’s heroics in both the games. Though, as Sunrisers returned home for their next two games, they were able to get two fantastic wins against Punjab and Delhi.
Despite the momentum of these two wins, a move away from home again resulted in a loss for Hyderabad against Pune. Their next game against Bangalore was a washout but after that, they defeated Punjab and Kolkata comfortably in their next two games. In their next two games though, Sunrisers suffered two losses against Delhi and Pune. Things were getting real tight for Hyderabad, but they managed to stay afloat in the competition with a comprehensive win against Mumbai in their last game.
Sunrisers have played with a fairly settled unit till now and their bowling has been truly exceptional throughout. They have some momentum coming into this game and need a win here desperately to keep the matter of making the playoffs in their own hands.
Gujarat and Hyderabad are facing each other for the second time this season. Hyderabad had scored a dominant win in the first encounter. This match being held in Kanpur, in theory, offers the home advantage to the Lions, but they have already suffered a loss here. Hyderabad has had a better season, and are also coming off a morale-boosting win in their last match, and all these factors give them an upper hand in this contest.
