About the Match
It’s been mixed fortunes for Glamorgan, winning the first match of the season against Hampshire and losing the next against Essex, as they presently occupy the sixth position in the South Division of the NatWest T20 Blast 2014 with 2 points. They go up against Sussex, which is currently at the 3rd position with 4 points from three matches, winning against Surrey and Middlesex while losing the recent match against Hampshire by a close margin. The upcoming contest will surely test the skills and perseverance of the players from both teams; the side that keeps its nerves together at crucial situations will emerge victorious.
With Darren Sammy from the West Indies joining the side, the team is well positioned to strengthen its batting line-up; he is an established all-rounder and his hard-hitting skills will definitely give an edge to Glamorgan. Winning the first match against Hampshire by a close margin of 10 runs, the batsmen kept the scoreboard ticking and put up a good total of 161; it was the fast-paced Will Owen, who claimed 3 important wickets and kept the bowling tight to restrict the opponents from getting to the target. Allenby was also economical while Wagg and Salter took a wicket each to contribute to the victory. However, in the match against Essex, the bowlers could hardly make a dent on the opposition’s spirits as they went on to achieve the huge target of 190 runs set by the Glamorgan batsmen. The shocking loss was a disappointment because openers Rudolph and Allenby had earlier put up an opening stand of 96 runs, which was further strengthened by Walters down the line; the batsmen had fought a tight bowling spell to put up a strong total but sadly the bowlers couldn’t deliver to the cause of the team. They need to regroup and rise above this loss to make a comeback with a win here.
Winning two out of three matches, Sussex has done well so far and they are growing from strength to strength with every passing game; their recent loss against Hampshire by 18 runs will be fresh in their memory and will try to recover from that at the earliest. Luke Wright, Ed Joyce and Hamilton have been contributing well with the bat but need to be consistent in their performance; while they won a low scoring game against Middlesex defending well, they have also shown their abilities to chase a huge total like 172 runs by handling tough pressure situation. The bowlers too have had their ups and downs, with Ashar Zaidi and Yasir Arafat contributing well with regular wickets while Piolet, Jordan and Yardy coming in handy with their tight bowling and wicket-taking abilities. The loss against Hampshire was unexpected as they had performed better than the other two matches but were just not able to survive till the finish line. The team has a good composition of batsmen and established bowlers; they need to focus and take their campaign ahead with more firepower.
While Sussex is still recovering from the jolt received from its recent defeat against a better team, it has the required match-winning combination of players, who can deliver when required. However, Glamorgan will be eager to bounce back into the series with a win, having lost one of its matches recently. Though Sussex will fight hard and give a tough challenge to its opponent, Glamorgan looks well placed to take this game.
