Its been an exciting Vitality T20 Blast with plenty of unanticipated results. The excitement has been even more for the fans of Derbyshire Falcons as never before they have seen their team progress to the Finals day of this competition. Derbyshire Falcons will have an opportunity to progress to the Finals day for the first time ever in the history of the tournament when they meet with Gloucestershire in the fourth quarter-final of the competition. The match is to be played at Bristol County Ground, Bristol on Saturday, 7th September. The Falcons will draw confidence as well as inspiration from the Worcestershire's win last year, who too were in a similar position before making it to the Finals day. Considering how the two teams fared in the group stage, a scintillating contest is certainly on the cards.
Gloucestershire had a terrible start to the tournament, but the fact that they managed to qualify for the playoffs speaks volumes about the kind of cricket they played towards the end of the group stage. They eventually finished at the second spot in the points table, thanks to a total of seven wins, one tie, and three washouts, amounting to a total of 18 points.
The most remarkable thing about their climb towards the end of the group stage is that six of their seven wins came in their last eight matches. They are coming into the upcoming fixture on the back of four superb wins and have momentum with them. They are coming off a big win over Sussex Sharks, the table toppers, in their last match, which would have instilled a lot of belief in them.
In the earlier part of the tournament, it was their bowling that was doing most of the work, albeit in vain. In the second half, however, their batting picked up pace as the likes of Matt Hammond, Michael Klinger, and Ian Cockbain contributed heavily to take them across into the top-four. They have arguably been one of the best team of the South Group in the second of the group stage, and beating them isn't going to be easy for any side, let alone Derbyshire Falcons, who will be under a lot of pressure.
M Klinger, MAH Hammond, JR Bracey, IA Cockbain, JW Taylor, Ryan Higgins, GLV Buuren, AJ Tye, Tom Smith, DA Payne, CJ Liddle.
Even though Derbyshire finished a spot lower than Gloucestershire, they had a smooth sail as compared to Gloucestershire, as far as qualification for the quarter-finals is concerned. They did pretty well in the north group as they finished third in their group with 16 points to their name. They had a pretty good net run-rate of +0.022, which speaks volumes about the results they posted. Out of the fourteen played, they emerged victorious on seven occasions.
Derbyshire have posted strange results in the seasons so far. Just when they appeared to be down and out after a 55-run defeat to Leicestershire, wherein they collapsed to 24 for 6, they bounced back to register three wins on the trot.
While Derbyshire Falcons are mainly a young side, their experienced players have contributed exceptionally well up until now. Ravi Rampaul has been brilliant for them and is currently the highest wicket-taker for them in the tournament. With the bat, Billy Godleman, their skipper, has led from the front. He has been their best batsman of the season and has only improved as the tournament has progressed. With Matt Critchley taking good care of the spin department, Derbyshire have their bases covered. Having said that, lack of experience of playing in big games could be a concern for them, and if they can overcome that, Derbyshire Falcons may well end up doing what Worcestershire Rapids did last year.
MJJ Critchley, BA Godleman, WL Madsen, A Leus du Plooy, AL Hughes, Luis Reece, D Smit, Ravi Rampaul, Fynn Hudson, Logan van Beek, Anuj Dal.
Check out the Dream11 fantasy of the fourth Vitality T20 Blast quarter-final, which is to be played between Gloucestershire and Derbyshire Falcons
On paper and performance-wise, Gloucestershire are certainly the better team. However, such is the nature of the game that anything is possible, especially when the two teams are having an almost equal recent record. Both Gloucestershire and Derbyshire Falcons are coming off a superb winning streak and have the momentum. Derbyshire Falcons also have the motivation to do well as a win here will push them to their first Finals day appearance ever in the history of the tournament. Having said that, betting on Gloucestershire would be a better idea, considering that they have experience available right throughout and, are, therefore, better equipped to handle the pressure. We think that Gloucestershire Rapids will edge past Derbyshire Falcons in this upcoming fixture.
