About the Match
Royal Challengers went back to their winning ways by defeating Supergiants; they will now take on Gujarat Lions, who stand 2nd with 6 points, on 24th April at Rajkot. The Lions were reined in by Sunrisers in the last match; they managed to put only 135 on board batting first and lost the match by a massive 10 wickets. RCB, on the other hand put up a power-packed performance against Supergiants, scoring 185 runs and went on to defend it successfully. Both teams will be eager to improve their rankings and pull off another good performance here on Sunday.
Finch failed to fire this time but Raina led from the front with a heroic 75 off 51 balls against Sunrisers; however, the rest of the batting line-up succumbed to pressure and they could only get 135 runs on board. Neither Tambe and Jadeja’s spin magic nor Bravo and Steyn’s pace could outwit the opponents and they went wicket-less to lose the match, a first for the Lions.
They have been fierce on the field but their recent defeat will definitely give them some learnings; the Lions have a strong batting line-up with hard-hitters like Finch, who has been in top form, Raina, Brendon McCullum and Bravo. The bowlers also have been exceptional in containing opponents while fielding first but when it came to defending a low total, they missed the mark.
In the match against Mumbai Indians, Tambe and Jakati took 3 wickets between them while Kulkarni was superb with 2-19; Bravo, Faulkner and Praveen Kumar continue to cause dismissals and restrict the opposition run-flow in a convincing manner.
Royal Challengers Bangalore
Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers continue to be the strong pillars for the team, posting gigantic totals when batting first; while Kohli scored 80 off 63, AB de Villiers posted a scintillating 83 from just 46 balls to take the total to 185 against Supergiants. Kane Richardson then showed off his medium pace skills as he took 3-13 in 3 overs to stifle the opposition; Watson continued to impress with the ball as he claimed 2 wickets while Patel and Shamsi took a wicket each although they were quite expensive. Smith’s run-out and Pietersen’s injury caused havoc for Pune and RCB won the match comfortably.
Prior to this win, they suffered two consecutive losses against Daredevils and Mumbai Indians; both these losses were due to a dismal show by the bowlers and they will need to be cautious against the Lions, who have been confidently gunning down chases with ease.
Watson is in good form with bat and ball and he can take wickets consistently; however, the same cannot be said for the rest of the bowling squad. Aravind, Varun Aaron and Richardson provide pace attack while Pervez Rasool, Chahal, Binny and Iqbal Abdulla can do wonders with their spin. They need to strategize well against the Lions and continue with their winning momentum here.
Gujarat Lions suffered their first defeat but will now be down on morale; they have the resources and determination to fight back. RCB, on the other hand secured a big win recently after two straight losses and will try to hold on to their good performance. The match could go down to the wire, but we feel that the Royal Challengers Bangalore who are in such fine form are better placed to emerge victorious
