Both Hampshire and Essex have no chance of making it to the quarterfinals of the Vitality Blast 2018. They have had torrid campaigns and are fighting to avoid the very bottom of the table. The winner of this clash will move a little clear of the three-way fight between these two teams and Middlesex at the moment.
With both sides coming into this match after defeats to Glamorgan, the morale is not going to be too high. They must find a way to lift themselves up and try to end the season on a positive note.
On paper, this Hampshire side is not a bad side at all. It is the same side that won the Royal One Day Cup this year and so its white ball form was good and it had some of the leading domestic players in English cricket.
However, James Vince and Sam Northeast, the two players expected to lead the batting for Hampshire have not performed up to expectations. Now that Colin Munro has departed for the CPL, Hampshire is hamstrung in its efforts to get a good total on the board.
No player from the Hampshire side has scored more runs than Liam Dawson this season and that is something that should be hurting the team. Dawson, for all his batting talent, is a lower middle order player at best.
Similar problems have plagued the team with its bowling as well. Wood, with 13 scalps to his name, is the leading bowler, but he has not got the support he needed to really make a difference. Mujeeb Ur Rahman has been good in patches but not as effective the team might have hoped. Now, with Dale Steyn joining the side for the last few matches, maybe the bowling will have a bit more bite to it.
It should be remembered that Steyn is returning from injury and has yet to get back to his best.

Varun Chopra has now reached 400 runs this season and he continues to fight a lone battle for Essex. The next best scorer on the team is Wheater with 200 runs, exactly half that of Chopra. Essex actually managed to put on a decent batting performance in its last match against Glamorgan but it was not enough to earn them victory.
They came up against a rampaging Colin Ingram who seems to have hit form at just the right time.
The list of disappointments for Essex is quite long. Their old stalwarts like Ten Doeschate and Bopara have struggled to perform with any sort of consistency. As luck would have it, the few matches in which Ravi Bopara has played a good inning down the order, the side seems to end up just short of the target.
Even in the last match against Glamorgan, Essex fell 6 runs short making Bopara’s 45 off 20 deliveries irrelevant.
With Peter Siddle and Adam Zampa in the side, Essex has some international quality to boast of. Simon Harmer and Ravi Bopara can also be expected to bowl with accuracy on most days. Will this bowling attack be enough to keep a struggling Hampshire side down?
The last match between the two sides ended in an exciting tie and they remain pretty evenly matches on the evidence of their positions on the league table. It should be a close match.

The team winning the toss is likely to field first especially with rain around

A rainy day has been forecast for match day and the possibility of a washout remains high. The pitch in Southampton is generally good for batting but a wet outfield, moisture in the air, and some dampness on the playing surface could provide assistance to the bowlers.
Hopefully, the rain will stay away from the cricket ground long enough for a result to be arrived at.
The last match between these two teams was a tie. They both come into this match with defeats against the same opposition and the players on both sides are clearly struggling with form. Stil, we believe that Hampshire has more talent in its lineup and should win this match.
Back Hampshire to win.
