HBH vs BH Match Prediction - Jan 01, 2022

The Omicron fears are now gripping the Big Bash League 2021 as well with four more positive cases coming out of the playing squad. The good news is - despite the fears, the match between Sydney Thunder and Adelaide Strikers is set to be played as scheduled. The fate of the upcoming matches is under the clouds of uncertainty but as of now, the tournament is likely to move ahead as planned.

Up next in the competition, Hobart Hurricanes are set to take on Brisbane Heat in what is a highly important match for both these sides. Hobart Hurricanes have clawed their way back into the top half of the points table and will now be eyeing to establish their supremacy. Brisbane Heat, on the other hand, are sitting just outside the top half and will be desperate to get some points added to their tally.

Considering the stakes involved, we expect this match to be a cracking fixture with both sides coming hard at each other. The match is to be played on the 1st of January in 2022 at the Bellerive Oval, Hobart.

HBH vs BH Team Previews

Hobart Hurricanes

After getting off to a rather poor start, the way Hobart Hurricanes have turned their campaign around has been remarkable. They have done so on the back of two fantastic hundreds from Ben McDermott and will be eyeing to get as many wins as possible to strengthen their position at the top.

They languished in the bottom half of the points table for most of part of their campaign, but as it currently stands, they are placed well at the third spot with 17 points to their name and a net run rate of 0.417. Sydney Thunder are breathing right down their neck and the Hurricanes will want to make a move towards the top. They have shown their intent in the last two matches they have played and keeping them quiet is not going to be easy.

Batting first against Melbourne Renegades, Hobart Hurricanes got off to the worst possible start, losing Matthew Wade and D'Arcy Short both in a short span. Ben McDermott held one end up and went about his business in a brilliant manner. Wickets kept tumbling around him, but with eventual support from Tim David, he took Hurricanes to a total of 206, which proved to be a little too high to climb for the Renegades. McDermott top-scored for them with 127 runs off 65 deliveries.

While it was more of a one-man show with the bat, their bowling was a more complete performance. Almost all their bowlers contributed well, be it by choking up runs or by picking up wickets. Tim Rogers and Sandeep Lamichhane contributed with three wickets each who were ably assisted by the likes of D'Arcy Short and Riley Meredith, who both picked up a wicket each.

On paper, Hobart Hurricanes are a little too over-reliant on their top-order, but they will not be worried as the same combination has worked magnificently for them in the past as well. On the bowling front, they have all the resources to put even the best in a spot of bother. All in all, if Hobart Hurricanes are able to do well with the bat and their bowlers are able to contribute as expected, they will be a very difficult side to get past.

Brisbane Heat

Brisbane Heat were touted to be one of the weakest sides when the tournament began and it isn't proving to be any different with the way have done so far in the tournament. Having said that, they are still pretty much in the hunt to the top half and another couple of wins on the trot should push them back into the contention.

As it currently stands, Brisbane Heat are placed at the sixth spot on the ladder with two wins from seven matches. They have a total of 10 points to their name, but thanks to their superior net run-rate coupled with a few more big bash points, they are ahead of Stars, who have won three matches.

Brisbane Heat would really be disappointed with the performances they have put thus far. They have often been in the driving seat in most of their matches, but lack of skills to handle the pressure has cost them the match. Their last outing was a prime example of that as they reduced Sydney Sixers to 47 for 8, who then managed to chase down the target without any further damage.

When Heat has been good, they have been brilliant. It's been two matches that they have not done anything substantial and will be itching to go out and perform. The onus will be on their senior pros in Chris Lynn, Max Bryant, and Sam Heazlett, who are all naturally aggressive players. We saw them promote Jimmy Peirson in the last match, but given the way things panned out, they are likely to move back to their regular playing order.

Their bowling seems to be better sorted as compared to their batting. The likes of James Bazley, Mark Steketee, Jack Wildermuth, and Mujeeb Ur Rahman have consistently done well and a lot will rely on them against Hurricanes, who have a potent batting order.

All in all, Brisbane Heat have an explosive unit on paper that can get better of even the best on their day. They have not been consistent enough in the tournament thus far and they desperately need senior players to step up. If that happens in this upcoming contest, Hobart Hurricanes will certainly have their work cut out.

HBH vs BH Toss Prediction

Even though the toss hasn't played a decisive role here at this venue, there is a certain advantage in winning the toss. In three out of four matches played here, the team batting first has emerged on top, but that was more due to their superior play. We expect spinners to get into the picture in the second innings and the runs on the board will matter. For that reason, we expect the captain winning the toss to bat first.

Pitch and Conditions

Hobart has been one of the most used venues in the Big Bash League 2021 so far and it has neither disappointed batsmen nor bowlers. Almost all the matches played here were sporting and we expect nothing different from the upcoming match too. While there is not a lot for the bowlers here, change-ups and variations get ample assistance from the surface. Keeping it tight and wicket to wicket to wicket will be the key for the bowlers. Batsmen once set should enjoy batting on this surface. A total of 175 was chased pretty easily in the last match and both sides would know that. Keeping that and the other above-mentioned factors into consideration, the team batting first would want to put a total of at least 180 runs on the board.

Hobart Hurricanes have been in terrific form and their wins have been possible primarily because of superb contribution from their top order. Matthew Wade is due some runs and we expect him to come good in this upcoming match. Also, Brisbane's opening pair has been rather fragile in the tournament up until now. Considering all that, it makes all the sense to bet on Hurricanes to have the highest opening partnership in this upcoming fixture.
